4J should add a way to create protected areas. These areas would not allow anyone to place or destroy blocks to, but still would allow interaction with doors or chests and such.

I do believe that's how Adventure Mode works on the PC, so we may be getting that feature when we get our 1.3.1 update

I would suggest that this be added earlier as an independent feature. The only current way to stop griefing is constant vigilance over every single player. This becomes even more difficult when people start migrating in separate areas. The only possible defense for griefer migration would be advanced security systems and alarms over the entire world. Even then, those machines could still be easily destroyed/avoided.
Besides, which good PC server doesn't have protected areas?

Well there's also
Offline mode
Invite Only
Only allow friends (not friends of friends)
Truthfully the only real reason to worry if someone's going to greif you is if you have ass holy non-trustworthy friends.
Also, a join/ leave feed with the kill feed would be nice, just so we're clear

You obviously have not seen the "Find Players" subsection. Many hosts own well-sized cities on Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and create advertisements for citizens there in the form of topics. At this point, just about any player can join/be invited for access. Why, some hosts even leave for hours without putting down any supervision!
From a parent's perspective, I would like to see an ability for individuals in the game to lock their chests (or perhaps even just one chest per player) from access by other players... perhaps with a simple password code. This wouldn't be so much to prevent high level griefers, but just to help regulate the activities of young groups of siblings who become easily tempted and start stealing precious items, like diamonds and pumpkins, from each other's chests. I think it would help soothe some of the crying that goes on in some households. The locked chest(s) would also have to become protected from being mined.

Thank you for clarifying for me, I assumed it wa 1.2
