if minebuilder for iphone is moddable, has infinite worlds, has survival with ores and crafting, and has animals, saplings and more, I think that MC:360 should have infinite worlds. You can't argue it; if it's possible on a device with 300MB of ram, it's possible on an Xbox with 512MB of ram. I don't care about weather; number one is meaningless. And I don't mind starting a new world, so I don't care. Just expand it. I'll deal with it, I'll be happy with bigger area's to explore. No matter the map distortion. There's even one for xbox, Castleminer Z, that has infinite worlds.
It. has. nothing. to. do. with. RAM.
It. has. nothing. to. do. with. splitscreen.
It was a business decision made at creation; we have absolutely no information regarding why it was made. Any reason you have seen for it so far was only speculation on the part of the poster.
We know 4J is "looking at it."
It will not change in the 1.8 update so you are stuck with the world size you have right now until at least next year (if it ever changes at all).
It is a well-know fact that 4J is using the PC code as a basis for development. It's been explained to me as not exactly a "porting" of the game but rather a translation.
I tend to think of the process 4J is following in terms of creating a new translation of the Bible (yes, I read koine greek). The translators can choose to go two routes, a "word-for-word" translation of the original documents or an "idea-for-idea" translation (or some hybrid thereof).
The evidence suggests 4J is using some hybrid of both. One has to only cite the number of PC bugs that have been reproduced in MCXBLA to see that 4J is following the PC code pretty tightly. At the same time, we also know that 4J is writing brand new code, because we have the different crafting interface and process.
Well that completely explains why the XBLA version might be suffering from performance issues re: world size, they are basically emulating the PC release on a machine that isn’t capable of running it, so they have had to cut down on features. This doesn’t exactly bode well for these people expecting game changing mods to be released for the XBLA version.
How would an xbox 360 not be able to run games like Minecraft?
Well, the entirety of it? Maybe if we transfer our games into the new xbox
rumored to come soon, we will have all of these features
This issue has already been brought up but it would not occur the same way on the 360 because the world is bordered by water. If the maps got bigger there would be one central island then the rest of the generated world around it (atleast on pre-existing worlds).
The biome coding will still cause climate change but the broken land in the screenhot would not occur.
it has nothing to do with that the broken land happening in the middle of areas and all sorts, it can still happen to us.
The fix for people who generate worlds now in the hopes of bypassing the terrain in the coming update is to not only generate a world, but to explore it as well. Just create a world, pull out your map and run around until the map is entirely revealed. All of the chunks will be generated and saved and won't be affected by the harsh chunk borders from importing old worlds. (the obvious way of knowing this is the current lag the game experiences when generating new terrain but not when exploring already explored areas) Just throw away the map and you'll be set. Of course, that won't solve the issue of climate change. Personally I wouldn't mind having my current snow-less world suddenly experience an eternal winter.
except this also happened to people in explored areas so also not a help, hell even happened in built up areas..
There really is no way for it to be adressed. Biome and terrain code change in the next update. The only way to stop the two things I posted from happening is to start a new world, or 4J not putting out the new generation, which would be stupid to do.
well they are going to need to alter it somewhat or the xbox will get very bland suddenly as biomes became much larger in 1.8 so with the small xbox maps we will get very little terrain variation otherwise. and surely the entire point in it being terrain *generation* is it should only hapen at the time it is generated ,the original 1.8 coding affected existing terrain too which is what they surely be looking to work around ?

which is also wrong but eh obvious you know better.
Very informative post. Really, the first once on it that has made much sense. Thank you.
While I'm disappointed to hear about the climate change since it may affect the functionality of my boat docks and boat tours business site I've been working on, I also have no problem with rebuilding in a new world. If it must be done, it must be done. I think I'll probably curb some of my building activities and plans in this world though until the next update actually comes out and I can see the effects of the change on it... and hopefully adapt those plans to whatever that new reality will be. If not, c'est la vie. It's only a game. I can start over. The advantage is that I'm a better builder now than I was a month ago.
As for enlarging the world, it is a great idea. No doubt about it. I agree that the current world size is going to feel a whole lot smaller when the space is shared by the new biomes. But really, everyone, whats the point in raging about it day after day after day? 4J already knows that many people want a larger world (if not an unlimited one) and they have also said that they are "looking at it." To my knowledge, they haven't said they don't like the idea; but it's also already been announced that it won't change this time around. They haven't stated why that is the case. Yes, it may be coding issues of some kind as some are speculating; but it may also just boil down to some dumb clause in a contract that has to be amended for it to proceed... and in the real world; those sorts of negotiations often can take some time.
which is also wrong but eh obvious you know better.
We have never (to the best of my knowledge) had it verbally confirmed by 4J that world size was due to savefile limits placed by M$. We know such limits exist, but we don't have proof that such was the reason. On the other hand, we have had verbal confirmation by 4JSteve that RAM and splitscreen function have almost no impact on world size.
Thus the best we can say, based on the communications we have had, is that it was a business decision. Is the decision likely due to some agreement between 4J and XBLA? Heck, yes. Do we have any information on the nature of such and the options that 4J can investigate? Nope.
Seriously friend, this is like saying 'Why can't my xbox play crysis 2 on full graphics settings at 120FPS when the pc can?' Porting computer games from one system to another just dosnt work like that. Nine times out of ten a game that is ported from one system to another requires a lot higher hardware specs, hense why console ports usually have a lot smaller resolution textures compared to the pc versions.
If it is true that a lot of the XBLA code is just rehashed PC code, then the problems they have about increasing world size probably comes from Mojang being lazy with the coding in the first place, as they wernt expecting the game to be ported to consoles originally.
I'm not the greatest knowing the insides to these systems, but I thought
the 360 would have just about the strength of a computer. Well you know
more than me about this kind of thing obviously, but xboxs are made for
gaming, why would a computer have better "specs" so to speak?
Absolutlely not, 4J is its own company. And Notch is working
on a different game, not focusing on Minecraft. However, Jeb
might have been talking to 4J about Minecraft.
Because the 360 was specced by microsoft nearly 8 years ago, do you think a pc you bought 8 years ago would run minecraft properly without an upgrade? it's running on hardware considered ancient by PC standards now.

Not true.
A developer for another xbox game posted that he does all the coding on his pc. The game runs fine at 60 fps. When he transfers it over to the xbox, it runs at about 6 fps. An update is taking extra time because of all the optimization he's having to do just to get it to run at a decent fps on the xbox.
I know all of you expect the xbox version to be just like the pc one- it just can't.... any more than the mobile one be like the xbox.
I know all of you just can't understand why we can't have infinite worlds. (And there's tons of suggestions from people who think they "know" how to do and are sure they've thought of ways the developers haven't).
Well you can- IF you delete some of the other things taking up processing time, like mobs, weather, lighting, etc. You can have infinite worlds, but not the minecraft as you know it, or minecraft on a limited world. You can't have it all, because there really is a difference between a pc and a xbox. Any developer will tell you that.
So there was design decisions and sacrifices made by 4J from the beginning in order to get it on the xbox:
The real minecraft experience on a limited size world OR infinite worlds, but only a partial experience.
I vote for the former.
I understand it.
What I don't understand is why you guys don't.

I agree with you. I would rather have the full Minecraft experience in a limited world rather than a half-assed Minecraft in a seemingly infinite world.
I've never really understood why people thing the Xbox 360 is as powerful as a gaming PC. It's as powerful as a gaming PC from about maybe 5 years ago, but it is no longer anywhere near the same ballpark and hasn't been for a while. If people want proof, all they need to do is compare the PC version of a game wit hthe console version. Provided the PC version isn't a port of the console game that is.
Battlefield 3 is probably the greatest example out there right now for the difference in power between a PC and a console.
you sir understand your own opinions the same as we all understand our own opinions! 4J have all ready said they are looking into making the worlds larger that sir is FACT!
Just because they said they are looking into making worlds larger doesn't actually mean it's going to happen. The fact is that they are just looking into it, not that the worlds can or will get larger.
Old world climate change wouldn't bother me at all if it didnt have the chance of being turned into a swamp... I remember when it changed on PC, i had a world i'd been working on for months then the main area i was working in was turned into a freaking swamp. I started a new world because i couldnt deal with that **** green color lol. don't get me wrong, i appreciate swamps, but if im not trying to build in one, i REALLY dont want to build in one.
Of course they're "looking into it"... they're "looking into" everything. They may fine some optimization they can do to let us have larger worlds... or not. I don't know, we'll have to see. But "infinite"? That's really pushing it, considering they have to also have "play" room to add future upgrades.
I don't disregard other's ideas or suggestions- they're invaluable and they've made MC what it is today.
But even you have to admit that some of those half-baked and "impossible" ideas make you shake your head at 'em.

jam packed with a ton of crap.
THERE'S NO DAMN EXCUSE!
