Hmm, let me add in my thoughts.
I, myself, hate duping, i think it's cheating, and taking advantage of glitches that weren't supposed to be there. But other people (my brother) do like it, because of lack of resources ect, ect.
Duping:
Yes, it's a glitch.
Yes, it's cheating, no matter what you say or what reason you have.
It's wrong: Well, thats an opinion, right and wrong (in this example, not in real life) is an opinion.
It crashes worlds: Well, true and false. While it's possible to corrupt the save file, it might not, it depends, theres no rate. It does however sometimes cause other glitches (loss of color, missing limbs on animals, ect, ect.)
Yes, you can be mature, and just forget about it, but i seem to find that most people, don't.
Some people like mining, some people like cutting down trees and gathering resources, others don't.
Hey, i HATE going into caves, you might love going into caves.
But, i, and most of the people that hate duping, find a sense of accomplishment when we do something without unlimited resources.
If you put me in a creative world, i would go mad, i can't stand it. It drives me crazy. I tried once, it got better when i took a diamond shovel and pretended to dig the dirt really fast, but i could tell it was instant, so i never went on creative again. Thats probably why i hate duping.
Other people like to have unlimited resources because they hate finding them, and working for them. They might have the creation of their dreams but, i doubt they will have the satisfaction of a job well done, because they had unlimited stuff. I don't hate creative mode, but i'd never play on it. Creating that giant piston elevator is an accomplishment indeed, but you didn't make the whole thing. You had unlimited items.
I believe the largest difference between creative and duping is the fact that duping is a glitch, and creative isn't.
It's like building a house out of invisible blocks, sure, you built it, you went out there and placed those blocks and did some work, but, you glitched those blocks in, you didn't make them, sure, you had to dig of ONE of them to dupe, but you still built it with invisible blocks.
Thanks for letting me speak my thoughts on this matter,
if you find any holes in my argument, or i repeated something please tell me.
Yes, you can be mature, and just forget about it, although, and i believe i'm right when i say this, most everyone that plays minecraft is between 8 and 14. Most of them aren't going to take a blow and forget about it.
You would be surprised to find that most people that play Minecraft are actually over the age of 20. Someone did a poll on the forum a while ago about age and almost everyone that voted in it was above the age of 20. Some were even in their 40s and higher.

Yup. 39 here. Many of my friends fall into the 20-40 range. Just have to be selective.
In almost every game, someone will find a way to hack into the mechanics. "Barrier breaking, 10th lobbies, you name it. "
BUT...The act of duplicating objects, or "duping", isn't the same as a hacker/modder's motives. Those who duplicate don't have the intent of cheating (99%) , but they rather do this for building (common sense). No one wants to create a diamond room that serves no purpose at all.
And for the non-dupers....IT FEELS SOOOO much more satisfying when you've built a structure out of pure, tool-mined materials. For example, I have a carpet floor in my hotel lobby, and it took over 15 real time days of shearing sheep and gathering red dye, until i finished my floor. And i have to say, it was like a dream when i placed the last block, i thought i would never get done.
For some reason, my hotel wasn't finishing fast enough. I needed a solution. So i duped.
Yes, i am guilty. Do i do it now? Of course not. The only positive thing was i built a 226*226 floating platform for my city...and it took literally half the time it took to finish my hotel, thats only a dot on my map.
Duplication won't last forever, as nothing does, so don't get caught up in it. It's just a version of creative mode, in which you create the creative mode. A minecraft paradox. You dupe or you don't dupe...and either way, buildings don't build themselves, no matter how hard you cheat.
it's a glitch....
it's cheating, no matter what you say or what reason you have....

Agree, it's a glitch; but utilizing a glitch already imbedded in the code does not violate the TOS, so it's pretty difficulty to call it "cheating" within a world the player who is duping owns and, therefore, sets the remaining rules for themselves. If they do it in a world where the owner of that world sets a rule of "no duping"... then it could be called "cheating."
It may or may not crash worlds... the effects of glitches are somewhat unpredictable... that's why they're called glitches. Accidental duping can also happen within the game... it just happened to me due to lag. I mined only 1 flower, it reappeared and although I didn't even mine it again (since I've experience the reappearing block glitch before), this time I wound up with 3 in my inventory. However, the intentional user of a glitch should assume all risk and responsbility if they choose to use the glitch and their world crashes.
As others have stated, the players of this game are all ages, and I would venture to say that the majority are over 14 since the forums are riddled with mentions of wives and jobs and children.
What individuals get their satisfaction from and what robs them of that satisfaction is purely speculation on your part. Each individual determines that one for themselves only. It's great that you get a better sense of accomplishment by mining resources first and then building; but people are individual and others may get less satisfaction by being limited to only those resources they can mine.
In the end, it's all the same... just clicks on the controller, is it not?
duping is mostly in my opion wrong i don't do it. Why because i love mineing sure after 3 hours of straight mineing it gets boreing
but after your giant house is done you look back and know you diden't cheat. Hard work feals good dosen't it,
I don't know how to do the glitch, haven't looked it up and don't plan on doing it. But I don't see how it's a big deal. We all have creative mode on PC version and will hopefully have it soon on XBLA. Hard work for building a virtual structure in a game, either way you mine or duplicate the blocks, you still have to build something. It just takes less time to go out and mine it all just so you can build it. IMO, it get's boring mining things after a certain point. It's a great experience, fun for a while, but creative mode is for those of us who like to build.

Try telling Microsoft that about glitches people abuse in Call of Duty games. People get banned every time there's a glitch in the game because they abuse it. Whether it's in the code or not, you can still risk being banned by Microsoft. Don't believe me? Go look at the Banned Account forums on xbox.com.

The premises behind play in COD and in Minecraft are quite different. Within Minecraft, the concept of crafting items and growing/reproducing items is already a part of the game. It would be difficult for Microsoft to say with enforcement that its within the TOS to put sand and fuel in the furnace to make glass blocks or to click A on the crafting table to convert blocks of wood into many more blocks of planks but outside the TOS to use a pickaxe and then your hand on a furnace and then click A when the player does nothing to the game coding to do either one - particularly when it is solely that player who is playing in their own saved world. Things change a bit when there are many players/strangers playing in one environment online. I've already said that if the owner of a world says "no duping" then duping could be called cheating (and, IMO, should then result in banning from that world).

I stand corrected, but i did see that post, and the lowest age on it was 12, so the only information got was people over twelve, i still think there is a great amount between 8 and 12.
And also it was people on the forums, not a single MC player i know uses the forums...than i again...i only know a few players.

True, but if you took a servery, that made every player answer, you could quite possibly come up with TONS of people that are 8-14, and all the 16-22 people on the forums would look small compared to the number, than again, it could be quite the opposite.
who cares if someone dupes it just like creative mode
It's not just like creative mode.
Creative mode:
A feature added into the game by the devs that is meant to be there and has unlimited blocks, flying, and no glitch/problems with the game.
Duping:
A glitch that allows people to cheat in unlimited items, while on survival mode, with no flying, and possible side effects such as, world save file corruption, missing textures/colors, and mobs missing limbs.

The games may be different but the TOS for Xbox 360 is still the same and it all depends on how Microsoft and the developer feel about the situation.

And do you know of anyone who has been banned from Xbox live for using the Dispenser/Furnace glitch to duplicate items in Minecraft, particularly in their own individual world?
I really like the idea of monsters popping up and having to scrounge and scrimp for my resources, so I don't do it. My girlfriend, on the other hand, only likes building stuff up and having a blast in her 'zen rock garden'. So yeah, my Rotoworld totally has chest after chest of duped wool, dyes, rails and the like, but they're on the other half of the map where her Steve spawns when she plays.
In the spirit of fun, I keep my scrounging/world destroying away from her, she keeps her giant duplicate-item structures away from my gritty portion of the map, and we both have fun.
Me.. well, I have a dinky little outpost, scrounging for iron ore right now so I can get up from my bedrock mine faster than walking. Good ol' minecart teleport elevators, ayup.
