I use a tiered system, one Paper is worth $1, one iron ingot is worth $150, one gold ingot is $250, and one diamond is $500, of course currency only works if your players are willing to use it, that's why before I made the world multiplayer I built a bank where you can exchange it for renewable resources ($1 equals one wooden plank) ($5 equals one charcoal) ($15 equals three bread, $5 equals five apples)
on my server redstone is $1, coal is $3, iron is $10, gold is $20, and diamond is $100, and when new players spawn they get 32 redstone to start and collect items from stores. BTW my map is totally legit.
