why do my seeds keep disappearing?

I have a small area under ground, it is plowed, but when I put seeds on it some of them disappear.

Torches do work for seeds. Seeds need a light level of at least 9 to grow, and torches give off a light level of 14. I got this information from the Minecraft Wiki.

Torches work. You just need a light level of at least 9.

ok thanks, and how do I get grass? I need to make a staircase out of dirt from the top to me right?

You are correct. A dirt block has to touch a grass block (diagonal counts as touching) for the grass to grow onto it.

Keep in mind you should keep your grass separated from your farm. Animals can spawn on the grass and trample your crops.

I put a fence under it so my farm is trample proof
