Can someone clarify why infinite world may or may not work on the xbox? I'm not even sure I have the right idea anymore. I always thought that after going a certain distance away from another chunk, it would unload, so new chunks could be loaded. Doesn't that save memory? I mean I'm pretty sure it does that already. Is it because the game has to save various data on chunks (Dungeons, trees, etc.) that have been loaded for the first time, or is it because the save file size increases with each new loaded chunk?
The game still needs to remember what is in the other chunks for when you eventually return to them. That means every chunk takes up memory, and keeps it. Infinite worlds probably won't ever be able to work because anyone could just walk until all their xbox's memory is used up.
Then again, a similar issue would come up with the pc version... so I guess it doesn't really matter.
I think the memory issue automatically adds a cap, but it could be so high that it wouldn't even matter. If by some chance you managed to reach that cap, you could always delete the world or just make do with what you have.
When you say memory, do you mean the RAM or the Storage device. 512MB of Ram is a tad bit small. I'm pretty sure there would noticeable slowdowns when the system starts to run low on memory.
4J is looking into World Size and they said they'd get to it eventually but who knows when that will be? I do believe that they will give us larger worlds but i doubt they will be infinite. The PC isn't infinite either it's just very very VERY large
