What I mean is that I don't understand how they work and how to use them.
They are all useful in certain circumstances. if you dont know exactly what you are looking make a topic with what you are tryin to get it to do and ask people if the know the proper circuit names. Then you can youtube them specifically to see how they work, why they work, and when they will work.
do you know what you are tryin to do now or just looking in general?

I wanted to figure out how to make a blinking light for a tower. But I don't know how to make it pulse.
I saw someone do it with a minecart, detector rails and redstone torches above each detector track. the mine cart track in a circle with powered rails and detector rails push the minecart it activates the detector rails which activate the torches. Of course if you cant understand what I'm saying then just go here http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Redstone_Circuits maybe you can find what I'm trying to say here

Another one to be honest, I don't really understand them either, and I certainly don't have a problem enjoying the game without using them, either.
For instance, people are so proud and excited that they can now open or close a door by throwing a switch.
OR (duh) just click on the door....
Sometimes I think most redstone use is more for show than usefulness.
neither do I, much. To be honest I think it requires a good knowledge of electronics to really properly utilize, i.e., how diodes work and how to translate numbers to binary, and stuff. There are people who have built clocks, decoders etc. that use a sort of "binary" code (via rotating blocks of different type) to then feed that information into the circuit via pistons and all sorts of fancy contraptions.
not really... you just need to know the basics on what redstone does, then just go through a bunch of trial and error.
after a while, you'll be a redstone expert before you know it c:
I'm pretty clueless with the stuff too, on my zen garden world there is a man-made plainland just littered with useless redstone wiring projects that I made just to practice and understand the making of specific logic gates. I have a very basic understanding and conctructed a simple door that needs a specific combinations of nearby levers flipped to open, but that's the most complicated I've gone. Practical use of the stuff is something that I think is going to take me a while to get used to.

Hehe I was too when I first saw redstone, I thought they were rubies, the first redstone circuitry that I saw was a pressure plate connected to a door and I was amazed. So I watched redstone circuitry all day and I learned a bunch of stuff. Now I'm an advanced redstone inventor took me about 2 days to make my own gatling gun . After that I was making all kinds of stuff that are pretty advanced. If you need help with anything redstone related I'm the person to call . My gamertag is Moved2USA send me a message if you need help . I could be your redstone coach or something XD, also if you want a motion sensor in your world send me a message.

Ok, I'll check it out.

Those rapid pulsers tend to burn out the torches. I suggest using the minecart clock because its the most stable one and will go on forever
