okay, i've got a 14x24x3 plot of dirt undergroud. i'm trying to get passive mobs to spawn on it. in the ceiling, i've got glowstone blocks. i read on the wiki that dirt needs a light level of 9 in order to grow.
my question: am i missing something here?

edit: no grass is growing at all

Do this to get the grass down to your place.

Note: grass will grow on a dirt block- IF the dirt block is within 3 squares of a grass block. (In other words, grass "spreads", it doesn't "grow".) Once the grass spreads on a series of blocks down to your underground plot, you can delete the blocks leading to the surface. As long as your underground grass has light, it will be fine.

Patience. This spreading doesn't happen overnight. It's gonna take several (game) days.

All of what is said above is true, but it takes for-goddamn-ever for grass to hop along a twenty block stairway. You can significantly speed the process up by using a piston and a redstone torch (as well as a spare block to place the piston and to hold the torch) to push a dirt block that already has grass on it toward where ever you want the grass to be. This should only take a couple of minutes. It's a somewhat tedious task, but it's better than waiting hours for grass to find it's way along a narrow path. Once it hits an open area of dirt though, it will spread like wildfire.

it took forever, lol. i pushed it with a piston, because every attempt at bridging it from the surface didn't work. +1 to snyder guy.

Or you could wait and hope they move enchanting to 1.8 then use silktouch.

Wat about trees underground can u jus use bonemeal or do they also need sunlight

Bonemeal won't always make a tree grow unless all the necessary conditions are met. Ie: you still need light and enough room for it.

However a torch placed beside your dirt block is enough.
