Does the amount of iron seem kind of scarce to anyone else. I've only been playing a couple of weeks so I don't really have any reference for how much iron I should be finding but it doesn't seem to be enough. I mine stacks and stacks of stone to get just a couple iron ores. It wouldn't be so bad but iron is needed for everything from tools to armor to carts and rails. On the PC this wouldn't be an issue but since map space is limited it seems like this is really gonna keep everyone from doing anything large scale, like a roller coaster or something. Just wondering if I'm the only one having this problem.
Stop just mining around randomly, iron is more common in caves. And dont really want iron, whenever i want to find something in minecraft like a pig, i never find it.
There is a little more than 100,000 ore per map. it's out there you just have to do a little digging. Aside from coal it's the second highest available ore in the game

I guess I have to just keep digging. where did you get that stat from? and do you mean there is 100,000 iron ores or 100,000 ore altogether? My last mining run was the most successful so far, I had 14 stacks of cobble and 40 iron where usually I only have about 5-10 iron so maybe things will start to pick up. thanks for the input guys.

Sorry I meant 300,000 iron ore altogether per map. Here are two links for the info. The first is from a guy on here who broke the mining system down and the second is from Game FAQ's(read the 13th or 14th question) w/the same info:http://www.minecraft...ou-should-know/
The most efficient mining system I've been able to develop is digging 1-block-wide trenches every 3rd row. If you have 2-block-thick walls between your trenches, you can see every single block at the depth range you're digging, while only actually digging through 1/3rd of the rock, dirt and gravel.
I dig mostly at Y=4-15, because the diamonds are there. But I find a fair amount of everything--coal, iron, gold, redstone and even some lapis. I haven't looked at the best depth ranges for most minerals, though. I really should do that to target gold in particular, which I'm having more trouble finding than diamonds at the moment.
I normally find tons more iron cave diving than strip mining. Once you get a good sense of how to place torches or markers so you know where you've been and how to get out, cave diving is probably the most efficient way to get ore. the bonus is that once you've lit up all the caves, any mob spawner you make above ground will be that much more effective.
I've had the opposite experience, particularly with the harder-to-find gems and minerals. Caves are too random, and too much of a navigation PitA for me to bother with anymore. I've developed a system of double torches pointing the way out, but even so, it's just too much extra backtracking to be worthwhile.

What you are doing is called Branch Mining. It's the most efficient way to mine in Minecraft and has been used in the game for years.

Yeah thats how I mine too, and iron is supposed to be any where below sea level.
I found a cave once that yielded about 160 iron, 50 or so gold and, I think, 27 diamonds in one single night. I have never had nearly as much yield with strategic mining.
OP - what level are you mining at? Iron Ore is generally found at most levels from bedrock to just below the first few layers of stone (below the dirt). It's not hard to find if you're at the right level. I don't know the co-ordinates, but anything from just below the coal to just above where redstone starts appearing is best, I can easily collect 64 iron in 30 minutes or so.
I have 2 mines, one around layer 40 and the other around 12. I usually have better luck on 40 since the only ores there are coal and iron. but I don't come anywhere near 64 iron even after mining for 2-3 hours. I think its just scarce on my seed. its so scarce that I have to make all my tools out of stone because if I used iron, I would be using it faster than I am finding it.

Where you find ores also depends on your seed, so if you don't mind making a new world...

Ore spawning is not dependent by your Seed.
All ores will spawn at their corresponding layers no matter the seed. The only thing a seed will effect is where stuff like caves, lava lakes, etc will spawn which could possibly remove some ores since they spawn after ores generate.
I have noticed a major lack of pretty much all resources in all my worlds since launch. All i ever see is cobble, cobble and more cobble. It is one of the reasons i barely play minecraft on my xbox.

Is your signature from Reservoir Dogs?
