I thought chain armor was a mod. And it's not as strong as Iron armor right?
No, Chain Armor is actually part of the game but it's crafted by using Fire. Since Fire isn't actually an obtainable block, you can't craft chain Armor. the only way to get it legitamately without modding your inventory is to trade with Villagers on the PC version. It has the same durability Iron Armor and barely protects more than Gold Armor. So, it's kind of useless in my opinion. It doesn't even look that cool.
What would be nice is to have chain armor underneath other armor for more protection and durability

Ahhh I get you. I saw a few MC vids on Youtube where the guys I watch use chainmail armor in one of the mods and it did seem like it broke way too easily Thanks for the info

It actually becomes available in 1.8 in Creative Mode but you can't equip armor in Creative anyways so it doesn't really matter.
