It is very frustrating but i think in a future update they shorten its mining time pretty considerably. Be patient. If you have a lot in storage you could always skip it while mining.

Well it's not like I can give some long scientific answer to the atomic make up of redstone thus explaining it's difficulty in mining.
Somewhere along the line Notch or the fellows at Mojang decided redstone should be a bugger to mine and 4J then copyed it over to the 360 edition
It will be updated later so that it can be mined very fast. I just looked at what update it was changed in, 1.9 pre-release. Which means it will be changed in the 1.2.3 update, unless they bring it forward in the 1.8.2 update.
Redstone is almost infinitely more valuable and useful than diamond or gold.
I would agree it is very useful but i think the mere availability of it really negates its value. I can easily get hundreds of redstone dust fairly quickly which can last for long enough to make many contraptions. By the time i need more to make fancier machines i usually have such a surplus of it from gathering other resources i never needed to make a special trip to get some. Besides my initial mining trips i have never been short on redstone for any contraption i have ever made, and i have made some really large complex devices. I have had to make mining trips to get more of almost every other material besides redstone dust.

I have to agree to an extent. I do have many stacks, already making some contraptions, without going to actually look for it.
But something like redstone, I'd much rather have too much of than too little of.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
Award for least helpful answer.
