I noticed a trend having to supply friends with more and more wood. I decided to plant a tree farm outside our castle that would allow all wood and saplings to be collected and replanted easily. When someone asks "do you have any wood?", I just direct them to the tree farm. This is much easier than running all over the map trying to find the right wood for the particular build. Below is a picture and video of my tree farm design, demonstrating how it works:

The hole is two blocks deep, 17 blocks wide. Water flows 8 blocks (including the source block), so the middle block will be dry. Dig the middle blocks down so water flows from the back to the collection point. The saplings and wood will fall into the water below and the current will bring all items to the collection area. Be sure to dig the hole two blocks deep so the saplings and wood can flow underneath the trees.
I welcome any constructive criticism on how to improve the design or any additional designs that may work better. I hope you guys enjoy.
Correct me if I'm missing something, but aren't you doing most of the work manually anyway. You plant, fertilize and chop the trees yourself. Why bother going through all that building trouble just to lead the dropping wood and saplings to somewhere else?

Normally I would need to chop all the leaves to get the saplings, or wait until they die and fall. This way I just chop the wood out and keep moving, while the leaves die. Once I chop all the waldo I can go gather all the saplings that died while I was chopping wood. I don't know of a more efficient way.
Having them equally spaced with a block above them (to stunt growth after a certain height) is a much better strategy.
I do like the idea about stunting their growth. Oaks are the most aggravating because they're so hard to get to. I'd like to use glass like a greenhouse but I think they'll break through glass. Perhaps tiling the roof with glass would work? I'll give it a try.
