Does anyone know the rules of passive mob spawning? I've been trying to hatch chickens by throwing eggs but with no success. I thought that the odds are 1 in 8? ( Broken 2 dispensers full, 16 pcs in each slot.)
Is it because there is only certain amount of passive mobs allowed in your area at a time? (chickens or other passive mobs)
Does it not hatch because my base is underground? (Dispenser throws against a wall, under where the chicken is suppose to hatch is water. See McRaventheMiner "eggs-ellent chicken farm" for ref.)
My base is well lit btw.
Or are there other mechanics I am missing or not in touch with?
eggs can spawn a chicken. I made one from throwing an egg up into the air and having it land on my face. that was actually the first time i did it and was a true wtf moment. i wasted about 10 more eggs with no success. then later on a friend was on with me and i threw one at him and it missed, hit a wall, and *POOF* a chicken. both times where outside. the wall one was during the day and the one i threw into the air was at night i think but i was near torches. i think i also did it another time but dont remember it clearly. anyways just saying it does work, but its random (for me anyways) and will waste a lot of eggs doing it.
Also, dont remember how many animals where around when i did them.
It doesn't matter where you throw your egg as long as there is room for the chicken to spawn. Since there is a 1/8 chance for a chicken to hatch from a thrown egg, you could just be having really bad luck.
Also, there is a mob spawn limit, but I don't remember what it is or if it stops chickens from eggs spawning.
There's no reasonably reachable limit to how many mobs can be spawned in your world at a certain period of time, especially in a natural setting, and that wouldn't affect eggs being hatched. So, either you are having horrible luck of the chickens are suffocating in the block it's being shot into. try editing the design so egg flys a little before reaching the point where it's supposed to hatch.
