Ok so in the PC version it was confirmed that Passive Mob farms via spawning pads was no longer functional.
I am currently in a xbox360 Seed -515,607,874,678,556,1704.
I built my spawner aprox 50-60 blocks from land to ensure it has several chunks of water surrounding.
Spawning pads are 4 GRASS (yes I waited hours to have it creep up to the pads) 4 grass covered pads of 4x4 (16 blocks); this totals 4x16 = 64 blocks of potential spawning space (assuming mobs do not spawn on torches, the spawner still retains 60 spawning blocks!)
In 30 mins, MAYBE got 1 sheep (standing at ~26 blocks from the nears pad).
I checked the nearest land and found it booming with passives, after killing all I could (impossible as killing the farther ones would respawn the area I just cleared).
This got me to think how come the chunk my spawner is on does not produce mobs? (at least why it's choosing the other spaces over mine) granted my spawner is BIG. I find it ridiculous to only get 1 mob in 1 hour.
I ask any clairvoyance on the matter, anything I might have missed (I've been doing spawners for a long time but not a lot with passives as it was patched on PC).
I torches a lot of the caves under the spawner as well;
The spawn rate AROUND my spawner seems fine, but why do my 4x4 pads refuse to spawn properly (I've seen youtube video that produce 5 mobs in 2 mins; understandable that mine arent that high but the gap clearly indicates I am missing something!)
One reason is that the animals probably spawned elsewhere while you were working on the spawner, and you hit your cap when you were finished. Also, make sure you aren't keeping tamed wolves anywhere near the spawner.
My passive spawner was also having this problem but through hard work I fixed it. First off, mine is a little bigger than yours, 16 6 x 6 pads with water streams. So, I used a hoe to remove grass from a large ways away from the pads. I used sand to fence in the removed area so new grass wouldn't spread(passives only spawn on grass). I don't know exactly how many blocks of grass away I cleared, but in some spots it was over 100. Also, don't stand too close, mine runs best when I'm about 30 blocks or greater away, i don't know exactly because I never counted. If I get right up on it it ceases working. I get a lot of passives, and they respawn almost instantly after dying.
