I read briefly about a method to mold large obsidian structures. It's not done one block at a time, and it uses a slightly different interaction between lava and water. I only read it in passing, because I was really looking for other info, but it seemed like something I may want to try at some point, assuming it works in this version of the game.

Yes, this indeed works. You first pour lava from the height you need, and then pour water on the next block over so both fall right next to each other. It creates an obsidian wall right away!
^^^^ Yes, you can make an obsidian generator with redstone, water, and lava but, although removing an obsidian tower is another topic I guess...... Better planning next time would be a good idea OP but, the only way is to either mine it out or, build something else around it to cover up the tower..... I have my own Oops builds too. My Nether pyramid seemed like a good idea at the time but, removing it was more fun Good luck!!!!

Retired StaffIt takes about 30 seconds to mine it with a diamond pickaxe, so you should have some fun
Better get used to it, unless you have a few hours to spend knocking at it.
How did you make a tower of obsidian if you don't know how to mine obsidian...
It has lots of usefull information about everything Minecraft
you should have a look around here too: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki
That creative mode quick punch thing would be nice. One hit per block. Oh well.
Nice! I did this too one time when my buddy threw some water on a lava pool, spent about 2 hours with duct tape over my trigger
