It dosnt hold the entire map in memory no, the problem is when the screen is split four ways, the xbox is having to render the entire game four times. The fact that you can drop in and out of splitscreen has meant that they have had to keep it the same in single player too. so the xbox is effectivly doing four times the work it needs to at all times just to accomodate the split screen.
The save files could just be connected, instead of it just being one save file. For instance, you could have a save file that can ONLY be accessed when you enter a special portal, and if you choose to enter it, all other players in the game come with you, and it loads another save for another world. You'd bring your inventory and stuff with you. The worlds would be connected, but they wouldn't be in the same save file.
Try not being a close-minded jerk next time before posting.
There are OTHER ways to increase world size -- ways that don't involve loading a larger world. You could have portals, or you could boat out into the ocean and the game would load another world.
I find it funny that you called him a "close-minded jerk", just because he had a disagreement based on factual evidence. Duke Nukem would be disappointed with the consistency of your balls. On topic, I'd prefer 1.8.2. That way, we can get more blocks, monsters, everything.
While yes, we could have portals that extend to other game saves, and things as primitive as that, however 4J has to pass all their new ideas and adjustments for the game through to Mojang. Notch / Mojang has been known to be prissy little children in this regard considering they've even gone as far as to keep things nearly identical, that they want the same bugs present in certain builds. Like the clay bug in 1.6.6. Yes, there are differences like, the 1.8 lighting coming in 1.7.3, but that's because lighting was streamlined in that update, and needed to allow redstone / pistons to work more properly, given that the old lighting system is broken beyond hell.
In other words, I'd like to see it happen, but it's not going to happen for a long time, if not ever.
... that they want the same bugs present in certain builds.
Hahaha, what?
No developer WANTS bugs to be present in any of their builds. We're seeing a lot of the same bugs because 4J isn't correcting the bugs as they port the game, not because Mojang ordered them to intentionally keep bugs in there. Don't be ridiculous.
i wouldn't want the map size increased right this instant, it's fine for what we have right now. Only reason i would want a bigger map would be either that they've finally caught us up to the pc version or increased the numbers of players allowed on a map.
Why couldnt they offer the ability to disable splitscreen and 4 player mode in a seperate DLC package that ... hell they could charge for. Maybe a way to disable 4 player and only allow 2 player as a downloadable "Mod" This would be able to double the size of a players world generation. Or even a solo world DLC mod that allows for max save file space but disables the ability to splitscreen entirely.
This would be a happy solution for everyone as people who dont have friends can play solo and people with friends can play with them. And you need a particular DLC to open up that specific save file which in turn tunes down the number of players?
This to me sound 100% feasible and gives everyone what they want .... Its more or less a work around.

Really? Then why in their livestream right before the game got it's first bug fix update, did the rep there say that Mojang was adamant about keeping them the same, right down to the bugs associated with them. Game breaking, no. They wouldn't keep those, but minor annoyances, yes. If I remember correctly the quote is: "We had saw the clay generation was extremely low, and asked Mojang if it was irregularity, or intentional, and they had said it was a bug however because it was minor, and present in the 1.6.6 build on PC, it should stay on the Xbox version until the next update."
Also, Notch had stated at some point in a response to the bug fix:
(This quote isn't exact, but it went something like this) "We had to deal with it on PC, so it's only fair that console gamers get it too, since it isn't game breaking."
Because that doesn't sound like it's intentional at all.
4J studios has said that they are "looking into" increasing world size, but it seems like it is fairly low on their priority list.
Why release new content when players will have to give up their old worlds to use it? In my opinion, 4J should halt development of the next update and just focus on finding a way to increase world size. They should then bundle the world size increase with the 1.8.2 update, to ensure that everyone can have the new features in their current worlds.
Thoughts?
I also agree even though the 1.8.2 update is the one update I am most looking forward to I would sacrifice it til a later date just to get expanded worlds

I guess that's why clay actually got patched well before 1.7.3 then?

"It's only fair" meaning "there's no reason they can't deal with it too." not "Let's intentionally make them suffer."
Haha. Why the hell would 4J Give up SplitScreen when it works perfectly in-game? There are no problems with it. Hell, I usually leave my friend all the way across the map anyway, So there is no problem with Splitscreen and bigger worlds. Bigger maps however should happen in 1.8.2, Espeicially if Animals aren't respawning anymore and we're getting big revenes and more biomes. Yes, 4J Studios needs the 1.8.2 update, and yes, they do need bigger maps. So what they could do if push Microsoft to get them to have these things! And if they do the 1.8.2 update will be longer for release if they succeed

Just so you know, animals do respawn in 1.8.2, it is just rare. As for bigger worlds, I think they confirmed that they will not be bigger in the next update, but unfortunately their twitter feed won't load for me so I can't look through it.
