4J studios has said that they are "looking into" increasing world size, but it seems like it is fairly low on their priority list.
Why release new content when players will have to give up their old worlds to use it? In my opinion, 4J should halt development of the next update and just focus on finding a way to increase world size. They should then bundle the world size increase with the 1.8.2 update, to ensure that everyone can have the new features in their current worlds.
Playing on the current postage stamp sized worlds when 1.8.x comes is going to be VERY overcrowded and naff.
Even if they have to delay the 1.8.x release 3-4 months this should be a priority imo.
Yay someone agrees! That never happens.
I wouldn't mind waiting until sometime in early 2013 for the 1.8.x release, as long as it includes an increase in world size. I feel like it's unfair that they expect me to just abandon a world I've spend 300+ hours on, simply to get new features. Obviously I won't do that, so it's also unfair that others will be playing on new worlds with those features while I'm still playing on my old world without them...
Sigh.. try looking through the forums next time, before posting..
It's been said a million times already - the only way to increase world size is to increase the save file size. And Microsoft won't allow that (well, they might but the chances of that happening are pretty slim if not non-existant at all). So it's not 4J, it's MS.

There are OTHER ways to increase world size -- ways that don't involve loading a larger world. You could have portals, or you could boat out into the ocean and the game would load another world.
That would still require a larger save file. Worlds are not loaded entirely from the start but gradually as you explore them. The further you go the bigger the file gets.
Either of the ways you mentioned would require lager files too.

What you are saying makes no sense to me, I mean I can make a million different worlds are you telling me that having to make so many doesn't take up a ton of space?

You can make as many worlds as you'd like, sure. But if you connect them all - this'll make it one huge world (making the save file huge as hell).
On the other hand you could just travel between them (not combining it into one). This indeed is a great solution offered by someone some time ago. But tecnically the world size won't change at all.
Each of your worlds takes up a different save slot, it dosnt matter how many world you have, what he's trying to say is the size on an individual save cant get any larger. Portals would be a way around this, but it would cause problems in the multiplayer side of things.
Why does it matter is my question is their some rule that a save file can only be so big?

Really, its been said many times ? Cause thats the first time I have heard anything mentioned about microsoft not liking larger save file sizes, idiotic when you consider they are small compared to some other games.
But honestly its a direct coding translation for the updates and something else for increasing the size of the map, one can imagine that various people can be working on both.
On another little note, erm a world size increase would be an update

Wait wait wait! Now I'm confused. I know about the fact that the save file can only contain so much, i got that part. But, if you can't have bigger worlds, than why can you make more than one? And, if these other worlds are contained in different "slots" than can't you merge the "slots" together to make a bigger world?
4J has said that they're "looking into" a lot of things. That does not mean any of those things are gonna happen.
They have never said specifically why the world size is the way it is- all we're doing is guessing why (files size, split screen, xbox limitations, etc.)
And how many posts have you seen from those idiots saying "I know how to increase world size! Here's how to do it!".... like they can come up with a workable idea in 5 minutes that the experts at 4J who actually know the program and have been working on it for months haven't thought of it.
If they find a way to increase world size (yea), you'll probably have to start over (boo).
If they don't/can't increase the size (boo), you won't have to start over (yea).
You all will just have to deal with it either way.
Why would anyone want this? With a bigger world size you just get more land to explore and build on. With 1.8, you get Mineshafts, Endermen, hunger, creative, sprint, silverfish, melons, new blocks, and other stuff.

A lot of the stuff coming in 1.8 won't be available without starting a new world. Mineshafts, NPC villages, melons, new biomes, and all of that will not generate if you explored your whole map.

Yes, but you'd probably have to start a new world to get bigger worlds anyway.

"Storage Considerations
Accessing a player's storage on Xbox 360 (to let them save a game, for example) requires displaying the Storage Device Guide where the user can choose between the hard drive or memory units. The best way to do this is to use the BeginShowSelector method as demonstrated in Getting a StorageDevice Asynchronously. The largest space available on a memory unit is 52 MB so any saved games must not exceed that size.
The maximum size of an XNA Framework project on an Xbox 360 console is 2 GB so the entire game, including support files (level data, sound, and so on), must not exceed that size."
Given that the current world saves are 16MB I'd have to say that splitscreen is the real reason why worlds aren't bigger which coincides with what 4J has stated before.

not that I don't believe you but is there an actual source on this?
