OK.. what I'm hearing is that no one has SEEN an egg turn into a chicken yet on XBox. That is probably a bug, unless egg-hatching didn't arrive until 1.8 or something.
Yeah I've experienced this too. We used to have very funny "chicken wars" with duped chests of eggs before the 1.7.3 update.
But after the update, I have yet to get one single chicken to spawn from throwing eggs.
Haven't really cared much about it, because we had our chicken egg fun previously and it was kinda "been there, done that"... but I can concur that every time I throw an egg at the ground now, I get nothing at all. ZERO chickens.
Apparently I haven't tried hatching any eggs since the update. I was dismayed to find that Chuck Dickens, my prized egg layer, is no longer useful (beyond being looking awesome).
I was using 3.5 stacks of eggs, exiting without saving between tries. There was an obvious difference between an egg smashing and just disappearing when the chicken hatched. The animations are the same (no egg smash), but no chicken is spawned. I tried multiple block types, multiple areas, many times and no luck. Not a single chicken, just random eggs that do nothing. I think this is a bug.
Okay, ive had this problem too, appears to be random. I through like, 200+ eggs one night and got nothing, other nights i throw 3 in a row that spawn dickens, even had a few quad hatches.
I was having this same problem, not quite as extreme but I threw 20 eggs with no chicks. Then, I changed the mode to easy from peaceful and the first egg I threw hatched.
This could be a coincidence, or it could be peaceful mode prevents their spawning. This was on the PC version 1.5.2

Peaceful mode only prevents spawning Creepers and such on creative mode.
Its very rare for a baby chick to come out of an egg when you throw it. Its almost like finding a pink sheep (Except that's on a little bit of the rarer side.;))
This does work. I spawned 9 baby chicks/ducks last night by throwing eggs on a dirt surface in a fenced pen. I was lucky enough to get the 4 chicks in 1 egg which helped.
Throwing eggs used to work better till the update where there were no animals(TU7?). After they upped the animal limit, I have had FAR less eggs hatching. May be better to just breed your chickens with seeds if your after chickens. Make lots of cakes to get rid of all your eggs.
I had the same problem, but I was throwing the eggs onto dirt. I did 30 eggs and no chicks popped up. Then I tilled the dirt as though I was planting on it. Made sure it was wet and turned with a hoe. I started to get every 4th or 5th egg producing a chick. Good luck. You should get better results than the lava approach.

It used to be insane. We'd have chicken egg fights where there would be HUNDREDS of chickens squawking all around us. LOL
They must've toned it way down and took all the fun out of it. Oh well.

Chuck Dickens:
What difficulty mode have you been playing in and have you ever changed it?
Do you remember if the eggs were collected before or after the last update?
Do you play split/screen or multiplayer?
Not being asked but maybe things will match up
Normal
Eggs collected before the update
Multiplayer

Eggs won't hatch if the limit of chickens in the world has been reached. Take out some of your adult chickens and see if that works.
