I'm starting a thread on ways to find mob spawners just because I've been having trouble lately finding one.
Thanks for any tips or advice. I'd appreciate actually help searching too! My gamer tag is Tru3 Shots
You should look in large caves, I know where one is on Glacier but I don't know if you used that seed for your current world. Usually you'll hear monster noises dig towards the direction, also look for mossy cobble stone in caves if you find some your definitely by one.
Usually I have really good luck with finding spawners. I just dig down to bedrock then start digging tunnels in both directions every ten steps from the bottom. This locates cave systems fairly easily and I've found them in there and I've dug right into one with an offshoot. On the "imagirl LOL" seed there are a lot of mine shafts that go straight down and there are quite a few that are easy to stumble across.
I've tried digging toward monster sounds and haven't come up with anything as it seems like the sounds are coming from everywhere.

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
Explore! I found one that was out in the open, revealed when an ocean was spawned just next to a dungeon. Make sure not to forget that they can spawn near the surface as well as deep underground.

I'll keep that in mind! I'm about to go exploring hopefully I find one.
Best way is to go in a natural cave system, and dig/go wherever you hear mob sounds of the same mob. For example if you hear 5 zombies growling at once, you found a zombie spawner. Just make sure you light it up so you don't die and lose it. Also, I never use cobblestone to block up a wall, so that way if i see cobblestone naturally i know its a mob spawner. I find them a LOT.
The trick is to always dig towards the sounds. The natural caves you find are easy access to resources, and may themselves lead to other caves that may have a spawner in them. Just keep exploring, they're out there.
It took me days of digging towards the sound of mobs before I found the first one. I found 4 in the next 2 hours of playing, 2 of them by accident. Good (loud) 3D sound, or good headphones makes a huge difference, as it's easier to identify if the sound is coming from left or down and to the left.
Also, when exploring below the surface, ALWAYS put your torches on the left hand wall going in or on the floor. When you want back out you just make sure all the torches are on your right and you'll never get lost. It sucks to find a spawner, and have to spend 20 mins trying to find it again (also, bring a map, and write down the coordinates). And marking the most direct path with flowers or colored wool helps to get back and forth quickly once it's been located.
Is it guaranteed that every world generated will have mob spawners? Me and the mrs have been playing on the same world for the for weeks and have explored tons of cave systems and not found a single spawner yet.
Yes, every world should have mob spawners. But is the amount in a world that makes it difficult to find.
The three spawners that I have found so far have been in dungeons that are all reasonably close to the surface, probably only 1/4 of the way down from a typical "ground level" to bedrock... where there's plenty of coal, and the Iron Ore is just starting to become common.
Maybe it's just my seed but I know from now on I'll continue looking at this level for dungeons - I found 3 in quick succession yet when I spent days on end down closer to bedrock I didn't find a single one.
I've found one at bedrock level on the Dead Mau5 seed, also there is one in a mountain right out in the open at surface level.
I built a house near it and didn't even know it was there until like a week later when I walked over to a hole in a wall and found a spawner.
I know there is a spider spawner in one of my cave systems... and I CAN NOT FIND IT. I dig towards the direction I think the sounds are coming from... no dungeon. I dig in the opposite direction... no dungeon. I dig up, down, left, right... the sounds continue, but I cannot find the stupid thing. Argh.
Suggestions?

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
more digging and better speakers/headphones I think... the sound in Minecraft doesn't appear to be terribly directional so it can be really difficult pinpointing sounds.
Is it possible there actually isn't a spawner, but just a huge dark cavern? There are some dark caverns under a farm house I made so I sometimes hear zombies in there but I'm confident there's no spawner - it's just a network of caves; it's a very "hollow" area.
I've walked past this area numerous times since the game was released (it was my very first tunnel) and EVERY time I walk past, it makes a spider hiss sound. I ignored it for months, but then read somewhere it could mean a dungeon. So now the longer I stay in the area digging, the more hisses I begin to hear... just can't find anything.

One of the worlds I've played on for 200+ hours didn't appear to have a single spawner. At least it didn't have many, and I wasn't able to locate even only one. My current world, however, has lots of them. I've found 13 mob spawners so far, some ridiculously close to cave entrances on the overworld, others deep underground and not connected to any cave systems at all. So it really depends on the seed you've used (or the seed the game created for you automatically) when it comes down to how many mob spawners your world has, and how easy or hard they are to find.
Easiest way to find spawners? X-ray machine, very simple to build and can be built in about 12 seconds. Only requires 2 blocks of TNT, 2 pistons, a lever and redstone.
I've explored a bunch of caves on my current map and haven't found any. Found a couple on an earlier map when I first started playing. All I've been able to find is dark caves they are spawning in. There is one I need to go back to, but not sure there is a spawner in there either. I'll trip over one at some point.
Thanks for all the great advice! I went exploring last night and found a spider spawner near my base, which is perfect because I lost my old spawner! I just went exploring in a natural cave and heard monsters behind some dirt which covered the mossy stone.

2. Visit desert biomes and look for sunken areas of sand.
This thread bores me.

I use it sometimes to find a spot that has no caves or lava, so i can build a big underground house.
Try not to use it to much...It can make the game a little boring, lol
