It's really just a matter of personal preferences in my opinion. Some people get a feeling of accomplishment from all the hard work from mining and gathering that went into a build, while others couldn't care less about where the materials came from and get that same feeling of accomplishment from just building something grand from a seemingly unlimited supply of materials(these tend to be the "end justifies the mean" type of people)
I personally would be caught in between both categories. I love just letting my creative juices flow and build whatever i want without having to worry about how much of a certain resource i have, but i also appreciate the feeling of accomplishment that comes with gathering everything on your own for a build.
I've yet to see many mind blowing legit builds, i found that most people's claims turn out to be false, but if anyone here has then i tip my hat to your sir...you're a man of greater patience than I.
So I guess the original poster must be pretty unimpressed with any real-life megastructure... Hell, any real-life structure at all...
I can assure you the designers and builders of the Eiffel Tower did not go and smelt & press every piece of steel before using it in construction, it was all delivered on the backs of trucks... Damn lazy good for nothing so and so's !!!
Moral of the story = There are a lot more factors that determine the impressiveness of a build than how the resources were gathered... I for one look at the design, the practicality and the detail put into a build, whether its 70 blocks high or 4 blocks high, whether its stone or gold, it doesnt matter - looks and creativity make a good build to me.
Some people have busy schedules with work & study & family commitments etc and dont have the time to dedicate to repetitive mining of blocks... They shouldnt be denied the chance to enjoy the game in their free time and build and shouldnt have their creativity limited by lifes commitments, this is a video game that they PAID FOR and they have the right to enjoy it how they please.
Threads like this are old, stale and lame... Stop caring about how other people play the game and actually put your energy into doing something constructive.

If people want to dupe, they're free to do so at their own risk. I really don't care if they do or don't. If they make an amazing creation that is duped, I could care less that they did. The fact that they have that good of architecture is enough for me to give them props. However if someone else makes an equivalent creation that is "legit", then more props to him/her. Let people play the game how they want to.
I personally cannot wait til creative mode comes along so people will stop these silly "dupe vs legit" debates. I just hope it doesn't evolve in to "survival vs creative" ones.
thats exactly what awaits us there will be no more duped discussions it will be "ah did thiz in survival yo look at me im cool creative sux !"
How would one know this thread titled simply "Duplicated Builds" is "Pro-legitimate building"?
As someone who is 2 weeks into building a rather large Dwarf fortress, and spent 3 of those days blasting to bedrock with TNT, and not even filling one double chest with cobble. I duplicated everything I thought I would need to finish my build( 4 stone, 4 cobble, 1 gold, 1 iron, 1 obsidian, 1/2 red-stone, and half glow-stone all double chests) I just ran out of all my stones before I came onto the forums. If I were to spend time mining everything it would take more then a month just to acquire everything needed to start.
Why should I feel less about my build because I didn't have access to a creative mode? When Creative mode does finally come in and everyone makes these unreal, mind blowing builds will you make a new thread bashing those who used creative mode to build them?
In conclusion I feel that it is my world, and if anyone has a problem with how its made then they have no need in coming for a visit. Its just an arcade game after all, we aren't competing for a million dollar prize here.Just fun a games. Live and let live.
Why on Earth would you ever dupe cobble? Are you that lazy that you just can't even mine the 2nd most abundant block?
I can assure you the designers and builders of the Eiffel Tower did not go and smelt & press every piece of steel before using it in construction, it was all delivered on the backs of trucks... Damn lazy good for nothing so and so's !!!
And I am sure that the Eiffel Tower was created without any hard-earned money. Instead, all of those tons of steel were given for free! Gustave Eiffel just broke a dispensing mechanism in front of hundreds of factories, and BAM!! Eiffel Tower!
No. It took 2 years, 300 constantly paid workmen, and 18,038 pieces of puddle iron. Overall, it cost about 8mil francs, or $34mil (the French Government reluctantly paid 1.5mil francs for it as well). Your argument is invalid.
Time I go on an interesting tangent. I have recently read a book called Ishmael: An Adventure of Spirit and Mind. One of the main themes of the book is there is no one right way to live. This means humans need to do trail and error to see what is the best possible way to maintain at peace with the world, while still striving as a society. I could go into much more detail about this book, but here is the point. THERE IS NO ONE WAY TO PLAY MINECRAFT. No one should look down on me or any other person for playing the way I want to. If I want to spend a month getting materials for a huge build then I will and no one should mock me for doing that. If I want to get a build done quickly and duplicate items, you should not look down at me. Even if it is not "legit," the final product should determine whether or not it is a good build. The way the person decides to make that build should not determine how amazing it is. I understand that some people abuse diamonds and such in their builds, but it shouldn't be the fact that they used diamond blocks, but they way they used it. Duping is like creative and lets people build when they don't have the time to play "the way the game was meant to be played." Time to sum this up. No person should look down on another for the way they build, As there is no one right way to build.
I just hate people that dupe, then say they did it legit!
s
I just went on a long rant in this topic and forgot to mention this That is the one thing I hate as well. At least tell us the way you built, because building legit is more impressive only due to the fact that they had so much time on their hands. The actual build is no different, but lieing is lieing and I don't find it acceptable.
And I am sure that the Eiffel Tower was created without any hard-earned money. Instead, all of those tons of steel were given for free! Gustave Eiffel just broke a dispensing mechanism in front of hundreds of factories, and BAM!! Eiffel Tower!

Precisely.
Any building that used this kind of preparation, construction, overall thought and hard work, can not be compared to a duplicated build in a Minecraft game. Who says that they took the iron and steel from an endless supply? They smelted the iron and used metallurgy just as much as any other building. They laid their resources carefully and precisely, because there WASN'T an unlimited supply. They took their time and waited for resources just as much as anyone else.
Work on the foundations started in January 1887. Those for the east and south legs were straightforward, each leg resting on four 2 m (6.6 ft) concrete slabs, one for each of the principal girders of each leg but the other two, being closer to the river Seine were more complicated: each slab needed two piles installed by using compressed-air caissons 15 m (49 ft) long and 6 m (20 ft) in diameter driven to a depth of 22 m (72 ft)[21] to support the concrete slabs, which were 6 m (20 ft) thick. Each of these slabs supported a block built oflimestone each with an inclined top to bear a supporting shoe for the ironwork. Each shoe was anchored into the stonework by a pair of bolts 10 cm (4 in) in diameter and 7.5 m (25 ft) long. The foundations were complete by 30 June and the erection of the ironwork began. The very visible work on-site was complemented by the enormous amount of exacting preparatory work that was entailed: the drawing office produced 1,700 general drawings and 3,629 detailed drawings of the 18,038 different parts needed: the[22] The task of drawing the components was complicated by the complex angles involved in the design and the degree of precision required: the position of rivet holes was specified to within 0.1 mm (0.04 in) and angles worked out to one second of arc. The finished components, some already riveted together into sub-assemblies, arrived on horse-drawn carts from the factory in the nearby Parisian suburb of Levallois-Perret and were first bolted together, the bolts being replaced by rivets as construction progressed. No drilling or shaping was done on site: if any part did not fit it was sent back to the factory for alteration. In all there were 18,038 pieces of puddle iron using two and a half million rivets.[23]
At first the legs were constructed as cantilevers but about halfway to the first level construction was paused in order to construct a substantial timber scaffold. This caused a renewal of the concerns about the structural soundness of the project, and sensational headlines such as "Eiffel Suicide!" and "Gustave Eiffel has gone mad: he has been confined in an Asylum" appeared in the popular press.[24] At this stage a small "creeper" crane was installed in each leg, designed to move up the tower as construction progressed and making use of the guides for the lifts which were to be fitted in each leg. The critical stage of joining the four legs at the first level was complete by March 1888. Although the metalwork had been prepared with the utmost precision, provision had been made to carry out small adjustments in order to precisely align the legs: hydraulicjacks were fitted to the shoes at the base of each leg, each capable of exerting a force of 800 tonnes, and in addition the legs had been intentionally constructed at a slightly steeper angle than necessary, being supported by sandboxes on the scaffold.

When you duplicated something it's up to you to know what to do with it, you can duplicate a bunch of wool to start on your amazing sculpture that you need to plan out and spend time building althought preperations don't take as much time duplicating and creating still takes as much creativity and work to build it.
I built a pixel art of charmander and I needed to duplicate because I had so little roses (I have an all tundra biome) and barely any yellow flowers but I still had to plan out and think to scale about it before I actually built it. I'm still proud of it but compared to somethin like the link OP posted It makes me want to do better and build something even more grand
If people want to dupe, so what. Have fun with your glitchy, trashed save files, no skin off my nose. What irritates me is when they dupe on MY map & don't tell me, which ends up introducing that corruption into MY world (F'ing duper griefers), and when they try to pass off a duped construction as legit. There's a really easy way to tell if a structure is duped or not, even though usually it's pretty damned obvious. Goes something like this:
Ask to join their world, you know, to look around, get "the tour". Then ask to see the mine.
"The mine?"
"Yeah, y'know, the mine or quarry where all this stuff came from..."
"uhhhhh...."
That's about when I say, "Well, I gotta see a man about a dog... catch ya later..."
I dupe for most of my builds and when I do I definetly do not use tons of gold and iron blocks because it looks really ugly and when I show someone my duped creation I tell them that it is duped.
You are the perfect specimen that duplicators say to appear commonly. You are the rarest minority.
everything i build is always legit. if i catch my friends duping i kick them
Same here...
We have one of the biggest collections of buildings in our BIG city, and NO DUPING ALLOWED....( Arena, 2 sky towers (10 stories), indoor farms, villages, a 20 room hotel and casino, all with NO DUPING...
To me, when I see something that looks really amazing I'm in Awe over it. But as soon as I find out it is duped, it completely takes away that feeling and just becomes "eh, not bad...".
Mining out all of your recouces is much more time consuming and shows time/work and dedication. Like some people say "Its impossible to do this build without duping", well I like felling I have done the impossible when I do a large build. Me and a fellow clan member have been working on a rather large, detailed project. Not duped and it has taken over a month and a half so far. I'll show pics/vid once we are done.
If you want to dupe - whatever, but people may not hold your creation to the standard of a non-duped world. I know I don't. That's just the way it is.

cant we just play mine craft with out all the minecraft police around I am so tired of it I minded out cobble stone for weeks and made creations and had case after case of cobblestone and was accused of duping.
I collect coal and store every bit of it I trough nothing away, while others through it in to lava holes and water traps..
I have a mob spawner as well and was told that is cheating as well
you know what I thought of every thing I dont know how to dupe people have come to my world and duped some how on stuff they built or contributed to.
if you want to get to the real issue I have a real problem with the games save issue and now they have a word up in minutes and i have been working on my map since MC XBL came out...
while I site there for 8 to 12 hours building they are done in 5 minute and tell me they built this and yet they just got minecraft yesterday two days ago or 3 days ago and I know how long it takes to build this stuff.

I think duplicating is just the preperation to get the project ready, you still have to plan it out and build it. This doesn't make the building bad, it doesn't make it not worth the legit ones just because it's duped, it takes just as much thought to be put into it, instead of hating on duping why don't you hate on creative? Isn't just the same? Why is creative any better? Because it was released offically? If you think 4J would over look a bug like this twice, then you have another thing coming.
alright.. i hate stuff like this. honestly who cares if someone duplicates. sure the world is much better if you dont dupe, but look how plain it can become with out it.. both of your pictures were built out of stone.. its way to plain.. who wants to hop into a world full of stone, wood and dirt buildings? all the good building supplies are only avaliable in mass amounts because we duped. so in the end, the duped builds turn out "looking better"

great , who let this clown start another duping flame war? wtf where the hell are the mods around here? can't mention herobrine without being shipped of the the bloody nether but this duping argument can be restarted in a shitload of topics......forget duping start a topic about mods.....maybe we can get their attention....
