I'm not sure if it's since the new update or whatever but I have not been able to hatch a chicken from an egg... I know the odds are 1/8 should hatch a chicken, but I have thrown around 300 eggs and not one has produced a chicken. I have also tried different blocks to throw them at but still no luck...
Anyone else have this problem? and will it be fixed??
If you really have thrown 300 eggs and not gotten a single cicken then something is definitely wrong on your end (or more appropriately, you are terribly unlucky and should never, ever play the Lotto).
Here's some real basic probability math. The likelihood of a given event over n number of tries is given as 1-(x^n), where x is the likelihood of failure. Since chickens are supposed to pop from thrown eggs approximately 1 out of 8 tries, the likelihood of failing to get a chicken from one try is 7/8 or .875.
If you were to thrown 8 eggs, you would only have a (approximate) 65% chance of getting 1 chicken. I.e. 1 - (.875^8) = .65
Now, if you threw 300 eggs your approximate chance of getting at least one chicken should be 1 - (.875^300). The component .875^300 equals 4* 10^-18 (that is a decimal point 17 zeros and then a 4). Ergo, the math says you should have a 99.99 (with at least 15 more 9's after that) chance of at least one chicken.
We only found out about this the other day so it does still work. My niece (who is 7) was playing and threw and egg at a chicken and apparently had 4 more chickens spawn. I didn't see it myself and she is 7 so take with a pinch of salt but I'm fairly sure it happened. Have seen it happen normally though over the last couple of days.
There is a chance an egg will hatch 4 chickens. Wiki says the odds are 1/256.
The group that I play with had the same issue the day after the 1.7.3 update. All the eggs we had collected prior produced no chickens when we threw them (we had collected over 2000 from a chicken farm we had). Now and again when we find free range chicken eggs we are able to get chickens to hatch, but if you collected them in one difficulty mode and switch to another at some point then all the eggs seem to change to the non-hatching ability it seems. We have tried this out many different times, so there does seem to be some kind of bug in regards to chicken hatching. We sent a tweet to 4J about it and they said they would look into it.

Edit: Nevermind I'm incorrect. Chickens spawning from thrown eggs has been in the game since Beta 1.0

Hence the reason I suggest you never play Lotto
