So I've been thinking about making a world to play with others on.. Maybe not full on rpg kind but something in the middle.
I have seen many a world with all kinds of mining currency. From diamonds to mob drops to lapis..
But the idea has come to me that a fun currency might be trees!
I wanted to get others thoughts on this one first.
There are two ways I see this being done.
1st idea would be to have a map with all 3 trees on it and make each tree block a worth so much.
Such as the plain trees you find all over be the least and the dark would be worth the most. (with the white wood block being the middle)
One would have to "prune" the land before hand to make sure the values of any one tree started out not to high.
Idea #2 would be far more hard core. One would have to go in and take down EVERY tree on the map.
Save a small amount (20-30?) of each tree sap OR just one kind if you like one more then others.
Have a med to large store of wood and make starting plots for the players of the map.
Give each a small bit of wood to use. Have a bank control the giving out of more wood.
I guess I see it like this, without wood, you can't do a lot in the game. It is one thing you can really take out all of on a map and control without messing with the map too much.
Only down side is people still can dupe it if they want to be dicks. But then you deal with this no matter what you use.
Also it might take a long LONG time to clear a map of all the trees. But still can be done..
What do you all think? I have a world that already has very few trees and I am thinking about taking on the task of clearing them all out.
I think that's a pretty cool idea. I seem to always need more wood for one reason or another. Wood really is one of the more valuable resources in the game. I mean, you can't even mine without it because you need sticks to make pickaxes. You would need to use it very wisely if it were limited in that way. It would definitely make the game more interesting.
Trading is the only way to have a currency system that works on the Xbox 360 Edition.
You want item A, which Player 1 has. Player 1 want's item B which Player 2 (you) has. You just trade. Using anything else, any drops, blocks, ores, etc as a currency just doesn't work because they can be farmed. Restricting the obtaining and use of something like wood would just make the game less fun in my opinion see as it's one of the most basic needs.

Using paper does work actually, if the admins know how to regulate the farming of sugarcane and make sure they just don't keep pulling paper outta their ass to buy whatever, whenever, to prevent inflation. Its not as good as just regular trading, but if the hoster knows what he's doing along the lines of keeping a level head on producing paper into the community. Just make doubly sure no one has a secret growing op in the basement... Gotta make a DEA in your world cx wouldn't want that job.

That's just way to much work when you could easily trade. I really wouldn't want to waste the time searching the entire map for every piece of Sugar Cane, then making sure nobody has a hidden farm anywhere in the entire world.
Well, yes, trading IS more simple and fast. But if you are like me.. I am getting plum sick of the same old same old.
That's why I thought a world with very little wood might be fun. Think of how much more work you have to put into what your doing!
But after hearing others thoughts, I think I might change it up from a currency to more of something worth a lot to trade with.
I mean if there is only so much wood to start off with.. You will really think about what you are using it on!
Might be a fun challenge to see just what you can do with what you have to start off with.
Sure, I would keep a hidden trunk someplace random with a few saps in it so that after one uses up all that you have to build whatever with you can still play on the world.
Thank you all for your input! I think I'm coming up with a great idea for a fun game with this map maybe!

I don't know you but would you maybe want to play on said map with me when it's done?
good currency =
diamond worth most
then gold
iron
lapis is completley up to you can be second most or least or how ever depending on person using trading should still be implemented throughout the game
On a pc server i used to play on, we would use gold ingots as currency. Then we got the iconomy plugin and now it seems emeralds are coming out. As for the xbox version. I wouldn't use trees since they are so common. I would use gold ingots or diamonds.
I'm starting to think people never read what a person is saying in a post before hitting the reply.. lol
Really did half the people not get the whole part of taking out all the trees first?
I like the paper idea. Can I play on the map with you?
Well, I'm not going to be doing the paper on this map. But I think I will try doing the wood idea just for fun.
Maybe not as currency anymore but more of a set amount of wood on the map and make a game of seeing just how far one can go with only so much wood.
Sure I would give it a try. Let me know how it progresses or if you need any help.
I'll prob take a few days to cut them all down but I'll let you know when it's done. Feel free to add me on xbox if you like. Name is the same as my user name here.
I wonder just how much wood should be left for starting.. If using tree chunks, maybe like 100 per player? I don't know... Have to think about it.
Trees are too useful, and a single sapling that is not in possession of the government could be seized at any moment by any thief. If an underground farm was created, around 80% of all logs in the cycle would be counterfeit. Inflation occurs, and eventually all order will be destroyed.
I would suggest using the Bullion-Credit system. It translates precious metals into something known as "credits."
The rarity uselessness of the auriferous metal and the useful commonness of the silver metal even each other out into a nearly perfect system. 1/10 credits are restored when the bars are transformed into a Block for maximum amenity. If you or any of your friends want to trade, you can make a public Commerce Center. You could become rich by spending all of your time mining, but you could also still gain that amount of wealth equally from spending a lot of time with your job in your server.
No matter what the currency is, there is always gonna be inflation. You can't stop it. It will happen. And once one person dominates the market, the rest of the market will complain and ask for a fair balance. Minecraft is a free enterprise. You can't get a fair balance. The harder you work, the more powerful you become.
That's just way to much work when you could easily trade. I really wouldn't want to waste the time searching the entire map for every piece of Sugar Cane, then making sure nobody has a hidden farm anywhere in the entire world.
Trading is much simpler and faster for my worlds.
It's just as easy to cheat that way. You could simply dupe a ton of diamonds. Obviously anybody will trade you anything you want for some diamonds. The only way to make sure nobody is cheating economy-wise is with heavy regulation. And even if you succeed at that, you still have to worry about several other factors, the biggest of which being griefers. It only takes one to completely ruin the hours of work for 8+ players. This is why I don't play on RPG servers. Maybe if they add player permissions and patch every possible duplication glitch, then I might play RPG style. But who knows if/when that day will come. Besides, I'd rather just build on my own world, by myself, or with one, MAYBE two, trusted friends.
