My first successful mob spawner (4 tries total, not counting renovations) is a fall trap spawner. 3 levels, all the same. Each level is a 20 x 20 room with 8 x 8 spawn pads in each corner (4) and 2 rows of water seperating each pad (4 again) pushing the mobs to their death! I get around 400 items an hour, the most i have ever had! But it has moments where nothing is happening. So now i am trying to put in a mob flush system. I want it to kick in every 20 secs. What i am planing on doing is having the back of each pad lined with sticky pistons and a row of water behind em. So this way they release 2 rows of water onto each pad.
Now my problem! I have 50 repeaters set on 4 clicks that are fed by a torch. The repeaters feed into a pulse limiter made with a sticky piston. You can find the schematic in the wiki for it. And then they give power to my torch/block tower to my water/sticky pistons. From the base of the tower again the power continues around to a block with a torch on the side to invert the power so the main torch at the begining flip flops. For the most part it works but eventually my inverter dies and i have to reset it!
Any ideas on a better way to do this? I want to make my mob spawner as effecient as possible! My mob spawners base starts at 25 blocks high and my structures are all well lit! I am assuming most of the caverns are too!
Thanks that was very informative! But i fount a better system for the clock. But now i cant get the water to flow over the whole pad and flow down to the next level. Willi have to add a flooding system for each floor seperately or is there a way i might be able to get water to flow down to each floor and flood it?

He uses an automatic flushing system, while allowing more monsters to spawn at the other pads.
