This seems really trivial, but a lot of people I've talked to haven't thought of it. To prevent griefing, just turn auto-save off, and save manually. Before you save, get yourself (and maybe a trusted friend) to check buildings, chests, etc, to see if there was any damage done. I normally start building alone, and if anyone comes into my world I save immediately and stop building until they leave and don't save.
When I go into caves and mine deep I have to play on peaceful because a spider surprising me will make me not want to play for a month and very paranoid.
I started doing that, but the downside is that you would have to be completely attentive. Walking way for a few minutes gives more than enough time for some random shmuck to grief it to hell.
What if you try building a cobble generating house around the spawn area? As long as its running, the cobble generator will keep filling in the blocks the player breaks with their hands. By the time the block is broken, a new one fills in the spot and they start over. The place is quite lethal, in fact. Just make sure you have a pickaxe when you go inside...
Kick any person you don't know..It's as simple as that.
Make sure you have it on invite only, and turn off friends of friends allowed so no random guy can join just by joining progress of your friend.
Always save manually, if your playing alone auto save is fine. Once someone gets in your world, be your friend or not I recommend just saving manually and checking up on your builds and chests.
Here's how I prevent being grieved. Sorry for the big pictures. Could someone teach me how to post "spoilers" so I can prevent the post from being too big please?
Players spawn on obsidian and can't reach any other block, except the stone bridge. However seeing how you can't collect cobblestone without a pickaxe, players are still trapped even if you keep the bridge on by accident.
Players still need someone to come and save them, due to the 2 block height of the obsidian/bridge placement.
The dispensers have arrows, switch controls lava flow over the dispensers via pistons. Button shoots all dispensers once.
Fun to use this and just simple target practice, with friends, using a bow and arrow against people I don't know entering my world.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
There's no way to prevent it if you're going to be inviting new players onto your map. Just watch them and make sure the people around them are watching them. Spawn traps are useless now that they've patched the friends list problem. Turning auto save off is cool if you're willing to check everything every time you're going to save or risk losing a large amount of work.

I've put a layer of Obsidian in between walls, the follor, and roof of my biggest house (it's where I keep all my valuables). It is surrounded by some traps as well on the outside. Of course I don't feel like doing that for every building as it is way too time consuming. I've pretty much only mine with three people who I know won't screw with things.
I protect all my important structures with unique traps that i designed. I put signs to deter people but they still try and end up loosing everything they have on them. If you wanna mess with my world at least i can have the satisfaction of a little revenge.

Ditto. My keep walls (from inside to outside): obsidian, sand, smooth stone. Griefer breaks through smooth stone, hits the sand, sand column falls breaking the line of redstone on the top of it, setting off all the TNT packed into the ground along the base of the wall. Meanwhile, I'm safe behind a wall of obsidian (mixing martinis in the blind, so to speak).
And that's just for starters. There's lots more if they decide to come back
Plus, every time I abandon one base to start another, I trap every inch of it. I mean, *I* know there's nothing in there but collapsing floors, crushing traps & TNT... but they don't. Muahahahahahah....

All those anti-griefer things you guys create are quite fun to read about. I keep it much simpler, though:
Invite only, check
Allow friends of friends, uncheck
Oh, I do all of those things nowadays. No autosave, keep a backup, usually invite only, etc. The only "griefing" that truly causes me grief is when I have unknown duping on a map, since that duping crap corrupts save files. Had to trash a mega build because of that.
But once the traps are done, I get the added satisfaction of seeing all their griefing attempts end in their own fiery, falling, exploding deaths before I revert to an earlier save. It's kinda sweet.

That's a bad idea don't wana sound like a di$& but it would be so dark and wavy and Wierd
Do you think I was serious? For real dude? <.<
Oh, people will still grief... It will just take a hell of a lot longer to do so
When I want to build on my world:
1) Auto-Save = OFF.
2) Settings set to INVITE ONLY, Allow friends of friends to OFF.
Any other time I never save or build, ever, and people can come and do what they please because I will be exiting without saving at the end of it.

I did the same thing lol.
Once upon a time, on the xbox version, anyone could join your game if it was open
Unless you had invite online on, which is retarded. You friend d/c while you're afk, and they're screwed.
