Ok so anybody can do this, i'm not sure if its really considered cheating, but what you do is this. You make a very tall, large floating rectangle. tall enough to where if you fall off of it, you will die. Then you hollow out the bottom so when you look up, there is a big hole in the bottom. You must have this big floating rectangle over where your house is, or near the area of where you make your structures. Then, once it becomes night, hostile mobs will spawn in the rectangle, but since it has no floor, they will fall to their death. then thats when you come in and take all the drops. This is more effective than just having a dark room and then just going in and killing them because of the risk of you dying or a creeper exploding. My friend who showed me this told me to mention his name, so if you need help, contact my friend Megatron hops, or me Mr Brotastic.
I have one of these on my level so its not completely stupid like they want you to feel, sure it doesnt have the amount of drops as a grinder but its way easier to make and is just plain convenient to pick stuff up when they fall down i dont want a mob grinder because im just too busy building big things already, eventually I will build one so don't feel stupid for not having a grinder.
EDIT: You really don't need it to be a giant rectangle i have it as a square in the sky 25 blocks up so when they drop instant death, nothing below i just a 3 high room up there with 4 water channels pushing them out.
Very true. Actually a pretty cool trick, to do this near a building you sleep in. Every time you come out you might find something.
Fyi OP, if you put signs on the outer most bottom blocks, facing outwards, mobs will think that the signs are solid ground. They'll be more likely to try to walk over the edge because they think the rectangle is one block longer.
Sorry if that didn't make any sense.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
Thanks guys, i'll look into this mob grinder. had no idea they existed.
The ethos lava blade design is pretty cool, but be prepared to spend a few days building it. It took me about 4 days playing 4 hrs a night. But if you can do it, it is awesome.
Kudos on figuring out a mob grinder (even if it's a relatively basic one) on your own.
As a hint, I've tried both an ethos lava blade & a deadfall (gravity kill) grinder... I prefer the blade type. It seems to have a higher yield, and it's less of an eyesore if done right. For a fall to kill mobs, you need a lot of extra non-spawning height to the construction, and you end up with a super -tall tower that stands out like a sore thumb.
On one of my maps, I did a single-blade grinder by digging out a pit & building up from there. Total of 8 spawn levels, but since I started out fairly low, the height matches the tallest hills nearby. I covered it with dirt & trees, so now it looks just like any other hill in the area. It's relatively small, but still has a really good yield (good enough for me, anyway).

Good on you for finding it without "professional Minecrafters" (....) helping you.
