I began my old world last night and saw a bunch of pigs, sheep, some cows and chickens spawn right away and thought, "this isn't so bad." Little did I know, that a pack of wolves also spawned nearby. Soon, all sheep were dead and I haven't seen one since. I killed the wolves to save my pigs, but they respawned minutes later so I had to pen up all remaining animals. Now I just have wolves roaming around, no sheep and no animals outside of those I managed to capture.
It is very odd wandering around an animal-less landscape. It feels lonely.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
I noticed this too, there's an OK amount of pigs, cows and chicken. But I didn't see one sheep yesterday, there were an over-abundance of wolves though.
Wait, are you guys saying that animals won't even spawn now?
Sometimes it looks that way. I know that animals spawn on every world, but sometimes they spawn in so ridiculously small numbers that you're having a really hard time finding any. Except wolves - those seem to be the new dominant species in Minecraft.

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.

I had a pack of about 7 or so running around this morning. It took me forever to find 5 on my last world.
I'm loving the update. But I did notice something that kind of worried me. I haven't gone full survival yet, been flying around creative just seeing what worlds generate. But the one time I DID turn it on survival...my hunger bar burns pretty fast. I seem to recall it lasting a few days on PC minecraft...I'm at least certain that it held through a day and night cycle. Yesterday mine was empty and killing me before night even fell. I couldn't find any pigs or cows, and you can't grow wheat in that time. I wasn't lucky enough to find red mushrooms either. So...I mean....I died. There really wasn't a second option. I did eventually stumble on to a village, so wheat was there and thats nice..
For those who want to farm animals, don't forget you can still have a chicken farm. Thrown eggs have a chance to spawn chickens so don't kill any wild chickens and begin collecting eggs. Throw the eggs into an enclosure and with some luck you'll spawn some. Continue collecting eggs and soon enough you'll a surprisingly efficient chicken farm. After my first day of playing the 1.8.2 update on a new world, i had 3 dozen chickens in my yard and a chest with 432 eggs to spare. This is infact a renewable source of chicken meat and feathers.
Ya my friends and I have a world and no lie we had to craft all of our beds from string dropped by spiders. We fully explored the world and found 5 chickens , 7 pigs, 3 cows, 0 sheep and a metric f*** ton of wolves. Seriously like super packs I saw 10 together at one point. So now we have to run around killing wolves to free up space in the passive mob count to hopefully get some useful animals. Honestly this "fix" they implemented for the 1.8 passive mobs is pretty half-assed IMO.
Honestly I would have loved to been there when they came up with this "fix" I can see it now "Let's make it so passive mobs spawn much much less." Another would say "Yes! that will work great with the addition of the hunger bar we just added. They don't need animals they have wheat and apples now."
"Wonderful!" They would cry. "I have the icing on the cake." one would chime in "Let's make it so that animals don't despawn, So if you travel somewhere to find a good place to build, and aren't killing animals on your way, by the time you reach your destination the passive mob limit will be reached. So if you want animals you have to back track to find them. The players will just have to hope the animals don't wander into a hole or out to sea or naturally overtime the wolfs takeover the mob count because they are the only passive mob which kills other passive mobs, thus meaning eventually through many kill and spawn cycles the animals all become wolfs...wonderfully useless wolfs."
Seriously though it's not game breaking most of the time but it is very annoying knowing that if I want to build on a 98% ocean biome (it has scattered islands) I won't have animals. Serious none at all on several maps confirmed by waiting within spawn distance for 20 mins. Well lit grass, no animals. You need to fix this 4J you have the foresight from the PC version. Put it to better use than this.
I'm with gamewinnerx this really needs to be fixed because I love the animals as i kill them when i get bored and if they don't respawn then im gonna be extremelly bitter and grumpy i say we don't need the enchantments as much as we need the breeding and if they really want just take it back to the old update where everytime i turned around there were like 10 more animals for me to kill because with this food bar the killing of animals is vital to survival and if they're just gonna go extinct then so are we (not really but u get my point) also the main thing is things like wool that people like to decorate with are going to have to be hoarded and used as little as possible to keep them for beds and dang we'll even have to stop making paintings...
also idk if this'll make you feel better but on creative i got bored and started chucking eggs everywhere and guess what some eggs did? They exploded into more chicken/ducks sometimes 2-3 so my advice is if this is confirmed by more of ya then hoard chicken/ducks and get there eggs and chuck them to make more so at least they don't go extinct

are you running and jumping at the same time?
no issue here finding animals. some of them stuck in the cave specially pigs!
So, in an effort to persuade new animals to spawn, I went on a wolf hunt. I found three and killed them. This is what happened seconds later!
Yes. There are 7 wolves in that shot... and 3 behind me. I killed all of them and they respawned a few steps to my left almost instantly. It seems I can't win. The only chance at ever seeing another sheep is to convert my level to Creative and spawn them in. Fantastic.

Wolves are definitely overspawning and kiling the passive mob cap
I would definetly rather see this breeding/animal spawn problem be fixed before any "additional/extraneous" features are added (like enchanting).
I can't win for losing it seems. Before the update I was constantly killing passive mobs that would casually stroll over to my builds and check out my progress..... (It happened so often it was even annoying). But, now I'll be building, and when I just happen to glance around I'm in a deserted world, with no mobs other than squid and wolves :/

So that's why passive mobs are quite rare in my world.
That is your opinion of course. In my opinion, enchanting is more important. I don't need the meat, I have a good wheat farm. I don't have any use for leather, and I don't really need wool. Whereas with enchanting, I would like to use silk touch to save inventory space while mining, and use fortunes to multiply non-renewable resources, among doing other things with enchanting.
HA!! IN YOUR FACES!! 3:D
Edit: Yes yes, quite extraordinary, is it not? I think that enchanting is very joyful, is it not? And breeding is equally important. Why not do both?
