One time somebody griefed my 3 houses ,im not a griefer, just to be even, i killed him ,now he has no diamonds, i wasnt for fun it was for revenge also took his hard work and put it in the nearby lava fountain then i left plus i hate griefers
I've learned to save immediately whenever somebody I don't recognize comes into my games -- as a friend of a friend. I have unchecked that option now that it's available and set my games to invite only. It's consquentially meant less people have joined my games, but hell, I'm such a control freak on my worlds and what I have envisioned for them, that's fine.
limit yourself to who can play in your world and who cant if your friends dont stop talk to them. if that doesnt work just appear offline and play without them...
Maybe try making traps that would kill people who mess with your creations. I know that's a lot easier said than done, but this way you would have the last laugh. When they die, you can take their stuff. If you really want revenge, make a trap that would send them into a lava pit or something so everything that was in their inventory will be burned. I understand this probably wouldn't be easy, but it's just a thought.
The main problem is that people simply are jerks. There are far too many people who have fun spoiling something for others. It's neither childish nor immature, it just a matter of "releasing the inner a-hole." The internet in general, and online games specifically, are the perfect playground for them not only because of the anonymity they enjoy, but also because they aren't in the same room with their victims, so they don't have to fear any repercussions.
It's really sad that one of the slogans used in Xbox commercials, "it's good to play together", which is actually a great slogan, has to be expanded with "if you know the people you're playing with well enough to trust them" to actually be true.
I have a "friend" that like to mess with me.. Now I will admit that so far he's not done anything that could not un-done.
But a simple you are NOT coming back if you do anything to mess up my work is a plan.
Guess to the person it is funny at the time and even may seem like nothing big..
But yeah.. Sometimes even little things can be a huge pain to fix.
They do it because it's fun. Ever try saving then just TNTing all your creations, or just greifing friends buildings whilst they grief yours? It's pretty fun yo.
Destruction is a nice change from Construction, after a while.

I'll put TNT surrounding my house just to see all the drops
Ive completely lost faith and trust in the community, and isolate myself to my lone world populated by but one man (ok, a few select people). Others may join, but only after its already been saved, and the only builder is myself. The catch-22 is that you cant completely trust someone, and neither can they. Someone has to break the ice, but who wants to put hours of work on the line to test a strangers integrity? I sure as hell don't.
They do it for the lulz. Trust me it is worse on pc. Because griefers can use mods to get creative mode. My friend's world was destroyed and covered with swastikas in the pc version.
Thats terrible! Why would anyone ever do that, thats just sick-minded.. no one does THAT for the 'lulz'
Well, my latest build project is a 1:1 (roughly) copy of Warwick castle... roughly 100m x 150m at the base, and I'm trapping the HELL out of it. Walls will have obsidian cores (at least the bottom 3m will), filling the dry moat with soul sand & land mines, plenty of disappearing floors sending people to a fiery, lava-pool death. It'll look cool as hell on the outside; one giant griefer trap on the inside. Since it's the biggest, most obvious thing on the map, it's a sure target for nimrods. Watching them die... repeatedly... should be fun.
My REAL bases, on the other hand, are all underground & extremely well hidden.
I have yet to come across a griefer, but after just under a week of having the game, I've made a mob system with and EMP (Etho's mob processor) a working music disk system (too bad there's only 2 right now...) and a few other things. ANYONE who enters my world gets the same warning, and if they do anything fishy, they'll get booted, and I'll revert my save if any major damage was done.
I do see the fun in going all out on people, making traps and such, and I admit that I have ideas, but I'll be making another world where that's open season, a world where I can make my traps, and other people can do as they please. That said, I'm never going to go to someone else's world and screw up their stuff. In the free for all world, that'll be stated in advance. Do whatever you want, but I'll have traps about... and wolves.... my point is, you can do those things without ruining someone's day.
I guess for griefers, that isn't enough, they get a kick out of seeing hours of tedious hard work get put to waste. It's one thing on something like say, CoD, where maybe one or two game can be ruined by it, small things, while in this, hours of work can be undone, or worse, laced with obsidian and/or TNT... I guess for them the fun comes in ruining someone else's hard work, which sets them apart from others >.>..
As far as "mature griefing", that sounds more like a world where it's designated to be okay to do so to others, and thus it's accepted by people within. That's more competition and playing against others than griefing. Griefing as I think is meant here is going out of your way to ruin an individuals day for no other reason but to cause grief, where as in your example, it's designated as part of that server's/ world's gameplay. I wouldn't mind making such a world at some point, but it won't be griefing in that case, although there's a lot of ways you can screw with people, it's expected.

I had the same problem. My friend set a tree on fire that was extremely close to my house. He joined and since I was busy testing redstone, I kicked him. He rejoined and I kicked him again about 5 more times. I was lucky enough that I ran out of redstone that I had to get more from my storage room, next to my house. I saw the fire and put it out before it got too huge.
Since then, I barely trust anyone. I only allow two friends in my world at once.
The reason for griefing? It's a psychological question. They get pleasure out of it. People, whether they know it or not, live to be happy. They are who they are and act why they act to be happy.

Yeah, I pretty much allow one person in my world from now on and always stalk them and look into chests when they also do :s
