I got Minecraft for Xbox 360 about two weeks ago and I've already deleted three worlds of lost hours of work I'll never get back, about 6+ of my creations set ablaze or destroyed, and deleted 7 friends from my list because they are griefers. Here is what I'm talking about(go to last paragraph if you don't wanna read).
I showed my friend the X-Ray piston glitch the other day and it was going smooth until on of my friends came into the game randomly. I don't mind this but I told him(every quote I say is what I said) "Don't take my stuff, dude." and he took my iron. I wasn't planning to save so I just let him kill some mobs. Right before I showed my friend the glitch, he had TNT and put it over the hole in the ground that I was showing my friend in. I hit it. He lights it again, I hit it. He goes 2 blocks from the hole and lights it. I did not have enough time to even get out underground to hit the TNT and me and my friend instantly died in the hole by the two TNT in the hole. This is what he said "Ha ha ha, ah, sorry dude, but its so funny." I instantly kicked him and deleted him from my friends list and game him bad rep. Luckily, my creations were not destroyed unlike the next story.
I have a best friend who I always played Minecraft with. I knew him since 3rd grade. But when he comes to my world, he tends to take my stuff and make armor, make the strongest sword, a bow if he can, break my bed, and kill me. I wanted to see what he was doing so I sneak behind a tree and I see him breaking my windows, blowing chunks out of my house and setting it ablaze(one of my creations). I quit the game and i want to kick him when he is in my worlds but he is my friend and I really don't want him to think badly of me. So guys, what should I do?
Last story, I had a friend that is the host of an RPG server. He was actually cool and never griefed and found and made his own house in all my worlds, hes a cool dude, but has some mean friends on his list. One of them messaged me and said "Can we play with (name of friend)?" I said sure. So I let him in(there is 3 people in my world) and in less than 10 seconds, 5 other people came and started attacking each other, including my friend. They had stone sword and my friend was defenseless. It was pretty sad yet I did nothing. So I am still working on my house and 2 guys dig under my house and come up the floor. I did nothing and I could fix it. But I discovered that there is some "base" under my house that they made(4 people made that) but it was no damage done to my house so I kept building. I went to mine coal for 30 seconds and 6 people left(its me and my friend). I got confused and I can telly why they left... they burned my house down. I just threw in the towel and deleted my world. It was over 4 hours of work I WILL NEVER get back. It was tragic since my friends had a cobblestone house mixed in with white wool(he had NO shears) and it was impressive and I tell bad for deleting my creation and his because of rage and lost work. I stopped playing for 3 days.
Why do people grief? Just for the "lol's" or just because its someone else's world so its okay to mess their stuff up? When I join my friend's world(story 2) if I break a redstone torch, he'll kill me yet he breaks my windows and I do nothing. I don't think its just for laughs or its someone else's world. I, in my opinion, think its something deeper than than but I can't explain it... maybe in time I'll get it.
So, why do people grief? Answer below and post some stories too.
The same reason people are jerks online. There is no accountability. Though it is really sad that people feel the need to do bad things when they know they won't be punished for it.
My guess is they have nothing better to do, or are just simply immature. But it sounds like you need to find some friends that are more trustworthy.
Have you told your 3rd grade friend how you feel about him destroying your creations? I don't see why he shouldn't be allowed to take iron for armour, & diamond for tools. As long as he replaces what he uses.
If I were you, I'd keep that "allow friends of friends" checkbox unticked. I see that as nothing but trouble.
They do it for the lulz. Trust me it is worse on pc. Because griefers can use mods to get creative mode. My friend's world was destroyed and covered with swastikas in the pc version.
They do it because it's fun. Ever try saving then just TNTing all your creations, or just greifing friends buildings whilst they grief yours? It's pretty fun yo.
Destruction is a nice change from Construction, after a while.

WOW! You should definitely look into a few safe measures for yourself... Un-checking the Friends of Friends Box, Checking Invite Only, Don't let any of your jerk friends in, go into the Looking for Players section and post and you will get quite a few of responses from real people who want to build.
What I do is whenever some one I dont know comes in I automatically save from the menu as they are still in spawn. that way if they do come in and attack I can always exit without saving game and come right back to the exact spot before them coming in, which means they don't have any of your items and you Buildings/structures are still there.
It's been happening a lot more lately so I just kick anyone I don't know, and they wont be able to join back.

Griefers are most likely those type of people who get online and act like complete dickheads. They do this because there is no punishment and it will not effect their lives at all. Take Fallout or The Book Of Eli for example. If there are no rules in society, people can do whatever they want. Some stay good, such as Eli or the brotherhood of steel, while most take the evil path, steal food, murder people, and become extremly reckless. This just proves to you how ****ed up peoples minds are.

Generalizing the mind of a griefer is like generalizing the mind of every human. Some may greif because of low self esteem or just because they're assholes.
But then what about non-destructive greifers? Like me, I'm generally a nice person and hte only thing bigger than my ego is my belly. But I've never destroyed anyone's stuff. I mostly just mess with people
However I do believe those who destroy others works are indeed assholes.

Just keep attacking their rep. let others know who they are and what they did. Informing the community is the best action. Also, leaving negative feedback does't hurt (I do). As to why, I would have to say for many reasons. They seem to come in all ages as well.
I always give people the benefit of the doubt, just who I am. But as soon as they do something even remotely close I kick them. I will kick everyone I don't know in the game just to find out who it is lol. But yeah griefers are like creepers, annoying everywhere and explosive.
