i thought my fireplace was alright as far as catching stuff on fire but apparently not. can anyone tell me how many blocks away flammable objects should be and do wooden slabs catch fire or no?
i heard it was two blocks wide and 5 height.
"Fire will spread over flammable surfaces, slowly causing all the blocks it can reach to burn away. Fire can climb up walls, across floors and ceilings, and over small gaps. More precisely, a fire (or lava) block can turn any air block that is adjacent to a flammable block into a fire block. This can happen at a distance of up to one block downwards, one block sideways (including diagonals), and four blocks upwards of the original fire or lava source."
A more elaborate answer.

ah so it can only spread one block down or left to right, and four above?
Yeah I too burned down my house with Netherrack and flames, never could get it right, rebuilt it and used Lava with a glass block in front to make my fireplace and have had no incidents since.

i think i may just do that. my fireplace is fine right now but i just don't trust it. i'm afraid i'll go mining, save it, come back to my house and it be burnt to a crisp.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.

Ok that makes sense. Every time I've made a fireplace, my second floor would always be on fire and I didn't know why.

you're obviously not very creative.
you could easily make a lava fireplace look nice.
