No matter where I place my bed, 2squares, 3, 4, even 5 away from the nearest wall Monsters spawn when I sleep without fail. I even Lit a room that was 11x11x5 with a torch at every block, my bed was in the middle (well away from the walls) and still I get attacked when I sleep.
The only thing I have been able to sucessfully do is elevate my bed and I can sleep, however when I do that I cant spawn at the bed because It says its missing or obstructed.
Don't build you house out of dirt, and make sure you place a door. Man-made structures might be better, so stick to a wood/cobblestone house instead of digging a cave inside a mountain or an underground home.
Try this..
In a corner of the room make a 1x2 spot for the bed, just place cobble or anything, then place torches on the outside of the wall And next to bed.
What i do is move my bed so that there is one block at least in every space around it. You should be able to walk in a full rectangle around the bed without jumping. Place a torch on each block around the bed. Only the blocks next to it.
It always works for me except once i woke up (about 5 or so times) and it was still night time. Like a monster spawned, but didn't finish because of my ring of torches.
what works for me is putting it in the corner of the room, one block away from both walls and also make sure that all the doors/trapdoors in the building are closed.
I have a problem like that where whenever i go to sleep, i get attacked by spiders, and only spiders. my slime farm/ quarry connected to my house with no doors blocking the slime farm to my house, though. my house is underwater so i can have it up next to the wall and nothing will spawn... but I don't know if it is or isn't my slime farm. Wait... can you trap animals and they wont despawn? Because i have a pet tiny slime behind fences and he hasn't despawned, so can i trap animals now?

It's probably because you're living space is too large. Had the same problem and it was because I just had too much surface area around. Try making your house into 2-3 rooms and/ or making sure the floor isn't dirt
This glitch has gotta be fixed i had lava running around my house o the a fence up to the higest point of the game no doors and tourches everywhere but still zombie infestation. They are worse than roaches.

How are slabs bad ? They walk over them same as normal blocks, and cant spawn on them.
