I was introduced to minecraft from the xbox version about a week after it was released. I really thought this game seemed completely stupid and juvenile. I ended up getting pretty hooked for whatever reason. I see people talk about the size of the map, especially compared to the PC version. Of course a bigger map would not hurt at all, but I'm personally satsified with the current size.
I would like to know how some of you start your world. It seems to me I usually build a small base within a mountain and begin farming tons of resources. I usually get 3-4 chests (2 chest = 1) of cobble/stone mix, 2 chests of logs, and all of the other stuff that comes with mining and fighting off mobs. Then I decide what I want to make and clear a flat ground big enough for my project.
Now this is my story of why I don't find the map small enough unless you build a giant skyscraper. There will come to a point where I need to get sugar cane for bookshelves and I dread this part. I ALWAYS get lost very easily. I don't know what it is. I'll lay torches and dirt around more often now, but before I got so lost I had to litterally start over on my same map. I finally found sugar cane and decided to make a mountain house and dig for redstone so I can make a map and get out. When I checked the map I was absolutely no where near where I needed to be.
Anyways, if you ever get bored get extremely lost and try to find you way back it actually ended up being fun (especially if you have nice loot on you) haha.
I start collecting as much wood as possible then when night falls, I dig into the side of a mountain and make that my base of operations. Once my chest is full, then I start making my actual house.
Sometimes I break the number one rule of minecraft and just dig down to test my luck. Other times I have a friend who does that, so I set up camp next to his hole, that way I can drop food and supplies to him until we can get a ladder for him to get out haha.
If I'm by myself, then I try to find somewhere I want to build on and collect supplies around that area, start small, then build up over time.
When I'm spawned in a new world, the first thing I do is look at my map (that's given to you at the start). I'm usually in the center. Always carry the map with you when exploring. It will always tell you where you are in the world and which direction you're facing. When you build your house/cave/base, look at your map and note the location. Really hard to get actually get lost, cause you know where "home" is.
Im an explorer I like to look around the map, so the first things I do is get wood make a table make a wooden pickaxe make a wooden axe find some stone make axe and pickaxe out of stone, make a furnace, use wood to make charcoal, make torches. Then I dig a 2x3x2 hole and spend the night in it. The next day I set off to explore. If i find somewhere of interest I made a 3x4 shelter and see what I can find. As I explore I kill pigs and cook them in the furnace. Every day I place and dig up the furnace and crafting table.
This is why my maps are too small. In 3 game days you have explored the map. If you dont find anything of interest you start a new map. I love exploring cave systems.

Anyway, I build a temporary base of operations & stock up on the goodies... While thinking of what to build.
