Hey all, I'm new to the forums, been reading for a few weeks. I checked the rules, and I'm fairly certain this is the right section for my issue. If not, I apologize and ask a moderator to move to an appropriate forum.
I have a primary world I've been working on, and after exploring a bit last night, my 360 locked up on me. After thinking it was just a bug, I restarted, reloaded, and ran the same direction, only to have everything freeze again . I've done a few searches here, read the known bugs list, and can't find seem to find this anywhere else. I've tested as server game, local game, reset my notofications in Xbox preferences (I found a youtube video that suggested this), that nothing has helped.
I've tried testing to see what happens when the game freezes, and the only thing I can think of is that a chunk on the horizon is bugged and loading, thus freezing my console. I have modded my game save via Horizon/360Revolution, but I haven't been in this specific area before modding to know whether or not the mod broke my save or not.
if anyone has suggestions or links to other threads, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I heard about someone who used a piston to push a block out of bounds and it caused their game to crash. If you edited your map in any way, then you may have a block out of bounds that would cause a crash everytime you loaded that chunk.
I do have pistons used, but they're for a bridge attached to a castle where I started/been working on this map. Let's say for the sake of coordination, this broken area is North of my castle. My castle is next to the water, I run north along the shore, get to this specific spot, and the game locks up. I tried running East out of my castle until it was out of view, everything there loaded fine. I then turned left and ran North until I hit water. I turned left again and ran West until voila! the game froze again.
I tried loading an old backup/save from long ago off the Memory Unit (I've been working off the hard drive), ran North, and the game still froze. Granted, that was also a save after having modded, but it's the only old save I have
It's a rendering bug. I had the same problem on my map, I worked around it by approaching the area at a crawl. It was tedious but at a slow pace I was able to move through the spot it kept freezing at.

Did you always have to pass through the area at a crawl? Were you able to clear the area out and remove the bug?
I'm just curious if you only ever worked around it, or if you fixed it? I'm going to go try the work around now

Once I passed through it once it didn't crash on the way back. I'd save while approaching the spot if I were you.
And I didn't mod my Xbox or game at all, so while modding could be the cause of your problem, it might not be.
and when the host picked the block up, his xbox froze. Essentially there's a block hex editor accessible from within the game (same as the OP's modding his save file) and it can do bad stuff. There was a thread on here about the technique last night. Luckily, after a re-boot, the world and his xbox was fine.
Another time our world had a full reset of player locations back to original spawn, which is unfortunately the location of our maximum security spawn prison. LOL End of world. Luckily we had a previous save and went back to it... but the point is, strange and awful things can and do happen in this game... and all we can do is hope 4J Studios is good enough at programming and code forensics to be able to track down each and every issue and fix them.
At this point, none of us - not even 4J - can be certain if they can do that or not. Only time will tell.
Well, I think modding did break bricks/chunks (but this can't be confirmed or denied). I did some major exploring and there's something North of my castle that breaks anytime I get close to it. I ran around on ground level and found the ocean boundaries of this seed, my start/castle is in what I could call the SouthWest corner of it. If I run all the way East, I can go North until I hit water again, no problem. When I run West again, I eventually freeze. I tried going underground to see if it was a render at ground level freezing it, and eventually ran into my cave/edge of my branch mine system and it froze. Reset, ran down into my branch mine, headed North, and locked up. So far as I can figure, my world is as such (from a top down view):
O - Ocean
X - Broken
G - Good
C - Castle
O X X X G G G G O
O X X X G G G G O
O G G G G G G G O
O C G G G G G G O
O G G G G G G G O
O O O O O O O O O
This is a rough guess, and from my running around, I think I have plenty of good space left to use on this world. I'm sincerely hoping that when 1.8.3 comes out, the recode of the game and creative mode will "fix" the issue. I'm pretty sure the problem is tied specifically to this world, as it's the only thing I've modded, but we'll see what happens with future updates. Good thing for 15m Autosave!
Thank you folks for helping! I'll keep updating if I find anything else out from further running around!
Trust me, it wasn't caused by modding. This has now happened to me twice. The second time was today. My 5th world, down the ****ing drain, once again. I'm seriously over this PoS game.

Well this is lovely! I've been working on the same map since my last time on the forum, haven't modded any more, avoided the frozen section of my map, and just found another section of my world that does the same thing, inexplicably, without any reason.

Did minecraft happen too freeze before you got the bad chunk? I'm pretty certain that's how they all started for me.
Meanwhile, in other news, I've played this game almost exclusively since it came out, mined and created extensively, and it hasn't frozen or corrupted on me once. I have not modded or duped at all.
OP, if you mod your gamesave, you're asking for trouble. I can't prove that this is the cause of your woes, but you would be foolish not to suspect it strongly.

I agree. Other possibilities, however, also include power fluctuations within the unit and/or a damaged or weakening hard drive (just coincidentally in the sectors used by this particular game save). It doesn't happen to everyone and it happens far less frequently than it used to (due to surge protectors and improvement in hardware); but it does still happen.
