Well, you *can* attach pistons to other pistons (stickies). A sufficiently tall column of attached pistons would retract enough to lower the landscape by 3 blocks, allowing you to drop into a tunnel; getting back UP would be tricky. Also, you'll have to have hot redstone wires on the right blocks next to the piston positions when extended. Doable, but complicated.
You can use pistons to do it. I have one in my world. I would suggest just just taking a few pistons, some redstone, and redstone torches and just seeing how things work. It is always more fun when you can figure it out on your own.
I want to build a secret room deep underground with no indication that anything is there at all, but I really have no idea how to do it.
