All Mob Spawners do is cause ridiculous amounts of a certain mob to spawn in caves you're exploring. Mobs will still spawn when its dark and inside dark areas such as caves.
Anyway, I hate destroying Mob Spawners, so I usually deactivate them with light and save them in case I decide to build a grinder there.
So I've been thinking about the Spider Army concept. When someone flips a switch, I want to move them up to the surface as fast as possible, and have them drop from the surrounding trees (probably build my own giant tree with wood and leaves to hide them during transit to the tree tops).
Is there any way to turn the spawner on and off remotely? Maybe sticky pistons that retract it or push blocks around it to keep them from getting out? I think I can figure out the water elevator to move them to the surface, just don't have experience working with spawners.
You or another player would have to be close (17 block radius) for it to activate. Once it is activated, it will spawn four Spiders in random locations in an eight wide, 3 high, and 8 deep area. Now, you could create a room around the Spawner and flood it in a manner that directs the spiders to a certain area. Once you've moved them to a desired spot, simply build a water elevator to move them up to the surface. If you want them to exit the water elevator quickly, simply have running water going over the water elevator in the direction you want them to travel. As the mobs travel to the surface, they'll want to get air. When they reach the surface they hit the running water which is pushing them in the direction you want, and they exit quickly without jumping around in the water. While this isn't built for Spiders, this has some great information about Dungeon Spawners and may give you some assistance:
You could create a simple piston activated holding area. In my case, I built a 1x2 piston door over the water elevator. When I heard the mobs start to drown (be damaged), I flipped the lever for the 1x2 door and released them out to the surface. You could set up other methods, but I wanted the water elevator to be completely hidden in my location.

Awesome. Thank you for this. I will be working on this for the next couple of days, assuming I don't get side-tracked by my many other minecraft projects.

No problem. Since you're dealing with Spiders, you're going to encounter problems. Whatever you do, I would suggest keeping it as simple as possible so your system doesn't clog up.
My Skeleton Horde works pretty well. I have my Spawner setup much the same way as the video I linked. Once they leave the Spawn area, I funnel them one of two ways - either to my grinder for bones and arrows or to two water elevators 7 blocks away from each other.
Now I've got some excellent ideas for the spawner I found while spelunking. It was a bit hairaising breaking through a partial wall and finding a cave loaded with beady red eyes and realizing they weren't going to stop coming!
I used to destroy all the ones I found while cave diving. Now I'm actively looking for spawners and am drowning in stinking zombies! Three spawners and all three give me zombies. Have to ask what a gal has to do to locate a skeleton spawner.

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
i kept one of each and built drowning traps on them.....the rest i loot and destroy as i find them not needed. my mob grinder works perfect and it built so i can quickly change it into an xp farm when i need to lol
