I doubt it works that way. Mobs will still spawn as long as it's dark, even if there aren't any sort of mob spawners around. they just won't spawn like crazy.
Until I finally made a large mob grinder (19 x 48 room, two blocks high) with a drowning trap where all sorts of monsters spawn (except spiders; strategically placed cobblestone slabs prevent that), I used to build grinders around most of the mob spawners I found. Now, I just place torches on and around the spawners to shut them down. But I would never destroy a mob spawner because I can't get them back in case I ever wanted to do something there.

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.

Mobs spawn when the light level is below a certain point. Mob spawners have nothing to do with it; they are local and do not increase the spawn rate of mobs on the surface. I like to make traps for them for the exp (why just get items, right! :)).
Don't destroy them though because you can easliy turn a dungeon into a mob grinder , and when enchantments come out for the xbox , you will be able to get an enchantment called "silk touch" And you can harvest them and place them where ever you want
destroying all of the mob spawners wouldnt even effect the spawn rate of any type of mob. The spawners are set I guess as kind of a trap for explorers. They're made to gaurd the chests that are in a the dungeon with them. They don't actually start spawning anything until you are like 16 blocks away.
Well, as for what to do with them, waiting for 'silk touch' & enchanting is a good idea... but at the point of that update, I'll be starting all-new maps anyway to get villages & strongholds & such. For now, I light them up to deactivate them. Depending on depth, they could make a good pitfall trap for other players... pull the wrong switch, and you're dropped, landing with maybe one heart and a nice view of the spawner... hehehe.....
I found a Skeleton Spawner just below the surface in my world and I'm tempted to create a player protection system with it. Basically, if a person were to encounter a player intruder/griefer, you could retreat to the area near the Skeleton Spawner, flip a switch, and then send them up for them to contend with. There is something appealing about your own personal horde...

I've only found a spider spawner, which I thought was rather pointless since I don't use that much string... I now have a new awesome project: Spider Army!

A Spider Spawner could prove invaluable. You could have an unlimited supply of wool (which in turn saves on iron for shears) and eventually spider eyes for brewing. Also, while Skeletons provide ranged attacks and can be damaging, their line of sight is limited and they burn in daylight. Spiders, on the other hand, see much further away and can track players better and survive in daylight.
So I've been thinking about the Spider Army concept. When someone flips a switch, I want to move them up to the surface as fast as possible, and have them drop from the surrounding trees (probably build my own giant tree with wood and leaves to hide them during transit to the tree tops).
Is there any way to turn the spawner on and off remotely? Maybe sticky pistons that retract it or push blocks around it to keep them from getting out? I think I can figure out the water elevator to move them to the surface, just don't have experience working with spawners.

Is it possible to destory all mob spawners in the world and not get any more mobs?
I personally leave my mob spawners alone just incase mobs dont spawn any more. What about you guys?
