I have a mushroom farm set up, using glas and half slabs in order to keep the light down. I'm using the automatic water channel system, and what I want to know is this:
I have the farm set up as such:
Will the mushrooms spread over and down one block while the glass is placed like that? If not, what's the best mob-free way to set up a dark mushroom farm?
Normal mode is so much more exciting though. I'd hate to have to tell my regulars on my MP server "brb in a few mins" every time I wanna harvest mushrooms.
I think making it one block high will do the trick. Might still get the occasional spider, though.
Yes, that's what I have, is a block of room between the ground and the glass. Spiders are fine, they'll jsut be trapped under the glass and I can drown them with the water channel, lol.
Well the idea is to have a compact farm that can still keep up with the demands of a multiplayer survival server. You take damage pretty quick on Normal so mushroom stew is going to be pretty heavily used, so I wanted a small dark room as opposed to a light room that large and complex to compensate for the slower rate of growth.
But yeah, I know large caves of mushrooms can spread pretty quick even under light.
Could always make a second floor like the flower gardens and make a piston light to make it bright in the collection area. Mushrooms grown on chests too if you arent careful. Could you make it so that there is a second water flow to take the fallen mushrooms out to daylight? Becasue of the way mushrooms spread Id put a couple higher than the rest beyond the water flows so you dont need to re seed them.
Guys, please.
I'm not worried about mobs or brightness.
I just need to know if a mushroom will spread diagonally and down if glass is next to it like in the original post.
With the glass and the slabs in the room, no monsters are going to spawn. Even if I had a huge mushroom farm, it'd still be dark and made of slabs and glass.
Id put 2 glass block down and put 1 mushroom on the block diagonally to test it out. If the mushrooms pop off itor doesnt grown on the second block you have your answer. Nothing wrong in testing before u build it.

See? You asked about both brightness and a mob-free setup in a single question, lol.
I do like your setup if it works however. I will definitely try it out right now and see if anything grows.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
So if you haven't figured it out already, I've determined your scenario is 100% plausible. I made this little contraption and 10 minutes later, your hypothesis was confirmed. .
Very nice, and I can confirm that it worked out for me too
So now I have a dark yet mob-free farm that allows mushrooms to grow at their maximum pace. And just for kicks, I pistoned up a redstone block and put it in the floor, so now when you walk into the entrace you get a quick dose of light to see how it's going.
Highly reccomended

Almost defeats the purpose of harvesting food, if you're very likely to be attacked in the process.

Yeah, I love that particular quirk about slabs.
