I visited an awesome world a few days ago that had a genius system built, they had like a sky-base way up above their world and the way they got into it was by teleport using a nether portal system.
What they did, as far as I can gather, is they placed a nether portal in a building on the ground and then constructed a base around the exit of it in the nether, completely encasing it and making it look like you hadnt entered the nether at all. Then they made another nether portal inside the nether base not far away, that you walked over to and it teleported you back to the normal world, but the exit was inside the sky-base.
Seeing as they completely enclosed the 2 portals inside the nether, it looked as though you hadnt gone to the nether at all, and all you had to do was walk into 2 portals and you were up in the skybase...
What I dont understand is how they managed to make the exit of the 2nd portal appear precisely where they wanted it to back in the normal world.. The only way I can work it out is that they created 1 portal as the entrance to the skybase on the ground, then built the skybase and added a 2nd nether portal, then linked the 2 exit portals up inside the building inside the nether?
indeed as i believe the portals dont correspond quite like you suggested otherwise, not least it would be a smaller distance in the nether but also i believe if the portals in a certain area in the normal world would connect to that nether spot, but i could be wrong on that.
1) Build teleporter underneath sky-base / starship.
2) Build sky-base / starship way up in the sky.
3) Link the 2 exit portals in the nether and add flooring / walls / roof etc around them to mask the fact that you're in the nether.
4) walk into the portal on the ground, across to the other portal in the nether, enter that and BAM, you are teleported into the starship...
Awesome!

Yeah, most people use portals to tele to other portions of the map, like villiages that can be far away sometimes. The nether provides quick access to those places.
Really? It works as a faster method across map as well? I figured it would just be a fast & invisible method of travelling up, because if you build the 2 portals close to eachother as far as blocks go, it doesnt matter how high above one the other one is, the portals in the nether will still end up close to eachother...
For cross-map travel, wouldnt the 2 exit portals in the nether still be a large distance away from eachother? So you'd beam up, walk across map to the other portal in the nether, then beam down... Wouldnt it be easier just to walk across map down in the normal world?

In the nether, one block equals three blocks of the Overworld, so it can be used as a method of fast travel. A friend and I were talking about incorporating this into our LoZ:Link to the Past remake.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.

There wouldnt be much of a difference in the xbox version. But if the world expands then it would be good.
i would love to make a nether teleportation device thingy because i really hate walking far.
unfortunately, i have no idea how to do this.
Same here LoL my friend and I have made a few Temples and plan to make some more among other things. We made secluded NP's close by the Temples to quick travel to the main area of my world. We tried to read up on the teleportation trick and were rather dumbfounded with the whole process so it seems we might not be able to get it to work :x

We did something similar in my world since we are using the entire map to build different style cities. We have nether portals on all corners of the world and one in the middle. The nether is now basically our train station haha. We laid tracks all through it going to the various locations it's a great method of fast travel.

you can turn the nether portals in to teleporters you press a dispenser as u go through and it destroys the nether portal then have repeaters delay another dispenser that starts it up again but in the nether hurry up and go back through bfore the repeaters run out and u will go to another portal that u build
its a simple concept when u see it but its a little tricky to build but very fun
it has been a ling time since i played with nether portal links on the 360, but if i remember correctly, you need to make your exit portal inside the nether (atleast that's how i did it). I used some cloned seeds to figure out exactly where placing a nether portal would take me, and i used it to link up to a floating island i turned into a base. hardest part i found on my map was actually linking the two portals inside the nether itself, because they both spawned in separate, enclosed caves inside the netherrack, so i had to go digging around in a creative clone to find the shortest route to dig from one cave to the other (15 up, 16 over, north-side). Don't be too discouraged if it seems very complicated, it's not, just can be time consuming if you're trying to do it multiplayer.
In my world I have a portal in the Nether that's far off from the rest and up really high so it'd be very hard to find for random people, they wouldn't even know there is a hidden portal, but when you go through it, it takes you up into a cloud house, it's a white square with some beds and other stuff and windows on the sides and the bottom so you can look out.
Oh and I made that by first stacking up really high with dirt and then making a Nether Portal.

Has anybody had any experience with these?

Retired StaffHaha yeah I just thought of that as well! Doh! At least that means it would be so easy to do!
== Linkage between Overworld and Nether ==
1) Build teleporter underneath sky-base / starship.
2) Build sky-base / starship way up in the sky.

Retired StaffNah in the xbox version its only 3 to 1, id say because of how small the world is.
