So when you push a button or step on a pressure plate, you get something like 1 second where the door is open. Does anyone know a way to make the door stay open longer?; like twice as long. (Not talking about delaying the door opening, rather delaying it closing after the signal has opened it). Thanks in advance!
First off, stone pressure plates activate for longer periods of time than wooden pressure plates. The ultimate way to extend the time of something with redstone is with Redstone Repeaters. That can be adjust to 4 different settings to allow the signal to take longer to get where it's going or coming from.
This is extremely outdated, but it will still give you an idea of what they do.
I understand the redstone repeater concept pretty well, but I am not sure how to apply it to a situation where if I step on a pressure plate to open my piston door.... How can I make the door stay open longer than the 1 second or so... In other words let me paint it like this:
I made a secret piston door. There is a button hidden nearby and it's set on a delay to give the person enough time to get to the door before it opens. The problem is my wife somehow manages to still get crushed by it. So what I would like to figure out is how to open the door longer (without using a lever but I will resort to this if I have to I guess) so that she has time to get through the door before it automatically closes on her.
Hope what I'm saying isn't too confusing, I can't think of any other way to explain it.
Thanks for all the help so far. I will look up an ABBA switch on the wiki when I get a moment. Thanks!

Add repeaters to the line and add delays. Yes this will delay it on both occurrences. Opening and closing. Found mine on Wiki redstone circuits too
