Do I have to start a new world to get the updates, or are they applied to existing worlds too? i have read mixed answers on the net.
It depends on what content you want. If you want something that is global, like pistons, shears, experience bar (1.8.2 update) then you can do so in your current worlds. If you want something that is created during world generation like abandoned mine shafts, ravines, and NPC villages (all 1.8.2) then you will need to start a new world.
That's probably the most asked/ answered question I've answered.
You DO NOT have to start a new map to get inventory and crafting changes, such as for Pistons and shears.
However
You DO have to start a new world for map generation features such as the clay fix and mine shafts.
For example. When 1.8 rolls out you will not have to start a new world in order to start planting pumpkin seeds and for the hunger bar to be part of your life now.
However
If you want ravines, mineshafts and NPC villages you will have to start a new world as 4J cant change your world once it's generated
you do not have to start a new world to get the updates. If it's clay you're after then any chunk generated before the update is less likely to have clay than a chunk loaded after the update (this is my understanding of the situation).

Minecraft XBOX360 edition generates the finite world all at once, so you will need a new world for terrain fixes.
oh i see, i was under the impresion that what you see on the map is whats generated (provided you have your map out while exploring).......
The way i explained that makes sense right? It doens't matter.
I thought it just generated what you've seen. Like if I'm on a mountain I'm going to see as far as the render distance allows so all that will generate. Could be wrong tho
