I usually have my ideas come to me while I'm building a structure, so in some sense I just sort of wing it and usually it comes out cool. That being said I have a set type of building I'll want to build before I start theen I kinda just build.
Weed helps too so I guess I get many inspirations after medicating ^~^
Sometimes as I'm about to fall asleep, and my mind is loading chunks, I'll think of something. I always go on the internet and try to find something to build but it always fails so I build my own stuff. I just sit there and think of something I want to happen, then think of what I have to create to make it happen.

I'm a discovery builder. So when I feel the need to make stuff, I just start slapping crap down. Then, kinda like an artist sculpting might do, I chisel away stuff I don't like and add stuff I do until I'm done. I made a giant lodge by just slamming down a pretty square, massive, structure made of wood and then cut away parts of it so it wasn't square anymore. Added some angled roof, threw in some neato stuff like a whirlpool under glass in the entrance and a shallow rectangle pool under some paintings with glowstone lights built into the water for mood and suddenly...POOF. Pretty things happened.
