I did a search through the forum and could not seem to find an answer to this. Does anybody happen to know why 4J chose 1.2.3 as the 3rd update to MCXBL instead of 1.2.5? 1.7.3 was the latest patch to 1.7. 1.8.2 was the latest patch to 1.8. Wouldn't it make more sense to update/patch the XBL version to the latest patch of 1.2?

Good question. I was looking through the twitter feed and never realized they kept saying 1.2.3. My guess is that they will actually be going up to 1.2.5.

I hope you're right about that. There are a few things that I would really like to see make it into that update like the different colored planks and different textures for sandstone (both of which I think were 1.2.4).

It could be possible that they are splitting it up also since 1.2.3 it going to have everything from the 1.9 pre-release also.
Because they're two separate programs that (contrary to what you might think) aren't really tied to each other?

If by aren't really tied to each other you mean a near direct port from PC to Xbox, then sure. They are very closely tied to one another, regardless of the fact that they are developed by 2 different studios. There are a few differences from the PC-equivalent versions to the Xbox releases, but they mostly similar. Sure, there was a feature of 1.8 included in the 1.7.3 update (lighting), but we don't know the reasoning behind why this was implemented earlier or if this is something that will continue to be done throughout the development process.

I think it is because 1.2.3 was a major update, the first major update since 1.0. 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 were pretty minor. They seem to like major updates so I would expect them to go from 1.2.3 to 1.3, to the next major one on the pc (1.4?) and continue that even after they are caught up with the pc. .
Ignoring every other reasonable answer to this, I'm pretty sure there is a file size limitation to updates on the XBOX 360. Considering the amount of content added in that update, its entirely possible that adding much more would exceed that. It could even be that part of the free updates deal that MS made with 4J....they could be working with smaller file size limitations as well. That would make sense to me, anyway. As for having them update, in August, to the build of PC minecraft that won't even be DONE till then....well thats just silly. They aren't even gonna be done with the java implementation of that build till around then...and it will take awhile longer to convert it to C anyway. Lets not start missing the moon while shooting for mars, eh?

I'm pretty sure you're right about a file size limit. I can't think of an update to any Xbox360 game I've played that's been larger than 3 or 4 MB. The only exception I know of is Halo Waypoint, but there you don't download merely an update but a whole new version instead. It was initially only 99 MB in size and now it's about 250 MB if I remember correctly. And frankly, I don't see any reason why Microsoft couldn't do/allow that with/for other games as well except them not wanting it for whatever obscure reasons.

The reason isn't obscure. Hosting file sizes that large means also providing bandwidth support to back it up. If you figure 3 million people, (in MC's case) are gonna be online and downloading it across 3 days...well they'd all be DL'ing it for days if the size was 1 gig. Thats on conventional bandwidth. You can provide larger connection sizes at a premium cost to the seller. By forcing smaller sizes you cut out the need to always be paying that cost, and also cut out the amount of customer support calls you deal with as 3 million players start bitching about having to wait a couple days to get ONE thing. Its just sound business.

Battlefield 3 Currently holds 7.1 GB's of space on my harddrive. Their newest update was 1.5 GBs.

Retired StaffEdit again: Apparently there is a 4 MB limit.
Two words: controlled growth.
I think it's 19gb on mine. Took me hours to download all the updates when I got it just a while ago. The updates were DLC though.
