Here's an idea for all you folks thinking your house needs more pizazz. Doorbells. Get a note block or two and put it under your doorstep, then make your own tune with it. Try it!
You could assign a button for the doorbell....but I'd personally wire a BUD switch to the door and have it run under the house into a large area so you could play a longer tune each time the door opens. BUDs can be pretty compact, depending on the layout of the house. I think the button plan would require thicker walls to cover correctly. You could do a BUD that connected the update block to the top of the switch so all the wiring was completely out of sight. The button would have to be on the bottom of the wall for the same set up. If the button were in a place more visually acceptable the wiring would have the power through the wall instead of the floor.
Now you COULD use a pressure plate.....but its gonna stick out and look out of place. On the other hand if you built your entrance stairs with plates on each block....wiring only ONE for the doorbell, it would probably look better.
Redstone engineering is less about making something do what you want and more about making it look good while doing it. You could use miles of wire to make anything but its an eyesore. The more advanced stuff you see in videos are always about forcing each type of circuit into more compact builds so its easier to cover and look right.
