I'm just creating this thread to touch bases with the other administrators who take the management of their server seriously. Let's share some tips and tricks to making your server run smoothly and without too many problems. For example, I keep my economy balanced by maintaining a spreadsheet with values for each mineral. If I need to inflate or deflate the economy, all I have to do is adjust some decimals.
Also, one thing that really rustles my jimmies is when someone fills out an application to join and I send them a friend request, only to get a message "Uhhhhh who is this...." I wish people would pay attention for once in their lives!

"When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die."
It's wishful thinking of course, but I've actually found quite a few solid people who are now my moderators and run the server very smoothly when I'm not around.

Might be the fact that you're relying on people who would actually fill out an application to make a friend.

If anyone wants to play Bauldur's Gate (1, 2, or enhanced) or Icewind Dale PLEASE PM me. I'd like to play.
I play with friends and we all just lend eachother stuff if needed, To hell with currency
Yea I second that notion, making things overly complex. I mean, you are just building and making grand structures in the Long run right? But I'm just talking about any servers that I'm the host of, which are mostly a tight nit group of close friends that freely share recourses with no questions asked. I do like the idea of currency when you have a large scale community on one server though. It serves as an equalizer almost.
(Edit;S.N) I'm ganna love these type of threads once dedicated servers are available, or shared hosting. Well, "if" they ever are. Fingers crossed they will.
Same here... I don't really enjoy big servers though, There are too many restrictions IMO.
'Ohh, You're not a woodcutter, Mine stone and buy wood'
'You've not asked to build here?'
'Since when did you not sell that diamond? you have to sell and buy them'
I could think off more, But they throw way too many rules in there
I've noticed this as a reoccurring theme in most servers and I think it's ridiculous. "You can't chop wood! You're not a wood cutter!" Then why the **** did they make me capable of chopping down wood? It seems ridiculous to me at times. In my server, we don't have any restrictions as to what players can do as far as work.
I essentially give them 3 paths. The first is that they can work for the city, get paid, and do their job. Simple. The second is an entrepreneur path. This basically means that they can make money however they want (trading, mining, working, etc) but they're not paid by the city. The final path is for people who don't enjoy building restrictions. They live north of the giant wall in my server.
So far, it's worked out much, much, much better than if you try and force people to not chop trees, mine, etc. It's a lot more natural and makes for a more consistent economy.

These type of worlds are role playing games. Its not for everyone but some people enjoy that kind of game. Its like some people like survival with mobs and others play peaceful. IMO its just people trying to make the game more interesting, like theme building you dont have to join in if you dont want to. Respect others who want to do what they want to do.

Yup, I'm not ganna disagree with that. It's making the most with what ya got. That's really prevalent with RPG minecrafters. I was just saying for the worlds I run, it's just sort of pointless since we all have full trust with one another an just want to build great stuff even if that means rummaging around in one another's chests cx We all just have this unannounced mutual agreement that sorta stuff is appropriate as long as we return the favor.
Of course unless they say that's their complete private chest than that's fine by me.
