I'm not going to lie to you guys... I couldn't be ass'd using the search button, so...
I've started a world (after the 1.7 update) & cannot find a single Squid anywhere. I've searched the oceans & lakes, & cannot find a single god damn Squid! Are these guys bugged in the new update, or what?
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm still working my Squid farm and was gonna wait till done for tut.
Here's some tips.
Squid are much like Slime, they don't despawn.
Squids actively seek the lowest point in water.
They seem to follow the same spawning routine as other mobs. Meaning they will not spawn in the chunk your in, and though a theory, the eight surrounding chunks. Still not 100% on the last bit.
With this in mind, start looking at any large body of water you have, and search the lowest point. Chances are this point is filled with squids.
No idea what the limits is, but while testing my farm, if I find an unusual time has elapsed not seeing squid(2 mins) I exit and reload. Instant squids every time.
If you were to create a pool, I'd find the end of a chunk(another use for slime finder yeah!) and make it 16x16x5. In theory, haven't made one like this and just going by everything I've seen.
Here's a pic of the entrance of my squid farm
I picked what seems a natural low spot close to my agri area. The entrance is below that little light in the middle of the water
There's still bit of work to do to make it as productive as my slime farm. I have to build-up the lake a bit forming a bowl that leads to a channel, that leads to the entrance. Seems like a bit of work, but with a dirt block and a ladder, little breathing stations make it fairly easy. I've all ready managed to collect a lot of inks sacs just by making it.
Hopefully I'll be done by days end and have something more concrete to look at.(vid)

Seatbelts are not as confining as Wheelchairs. Buckle up.
In my world, in the sea near my village there's this trench. It's clear down at the bottom of the sea, it's 5 blocks long but only one block wide and 1 block deep. Everytime I swim down there, there's like 3 squids stuck in it, and they've been in there for as long as I can remember.
Maybe something similar is happening in your world, the squid are all stuck in a hole!
Echocrack's comment is somewhat important if your looking for squids, or trying to build a farm. Those little pockets of one or two blocks that make the lowest spots underwater can really accumulate squids, preventing discovery or farming. I'm spending more time outside my farm shaping the bowl then the actual farm. I'm starting to think just making a tank would have been easier.
Also, if you do intend on farming, avoid long canals. Squid swim erratic, stop, and look for low points. Create a good spawn area for them to pool together, and a very short entry to a kill spot. Let the drops do the traveling, not the squids. Haven't gotten the lava kill area down pat, and might go with pistons.
You could easily avoid making an extensive farm and just note where they accumulate. Just make a series of air pockets or a tunnel to that spot.

I know how, & where, to find the squid. But it's no point farming for them if they are not spawning in this world. I've swam around the map & found none, nada, bucklies. Just wanted to see if anyone else was having this problem.
I used to have squids spawn in a waterfall I made, but now that you mention it, I haven't seen any recently. Though I haven't been looking it the oceans for any.

Btw-don't suppose you'd shorten that big blank space in your sig?

Be my guest. All I ask is that you give me credit for the creativity & uniqueness of the design. lol 0_o
