I have recently been playing on my ssp world and I made a branch mine at about level 9 going three blocks high to level 11. I know that there is a greatly decreased amount of ores and gems (diamonds) in the current version of mcx360 (1.7.3) but I didn't know just by how much. In the current 1.2.5 version which we are all familiar with, there are about 3 diamonds per chunk. A vein of diamonds can consist of a maximum of 10 to a minimum of 1. That being said there is a chance of there being 1 chunk for every 3-4 chunks that actually has a diamond vein in it.
However, my current branch mine has covered several chunks and the branches go out very far yet I have only found 2 separate veins of diamonds. Anyone else getting this much of a decrease in there mines. If not please explain what you have done differently.
One thing you can try is extending your branch mine downward. Might as well look for diamonds in the bottom 9 levels also. I haven't had any problem finding diamonds.

Thank you. Funny thing is that the first vein of diamonds I found was a block i accidentally broke below the layer 9 that i had been working on. I'll mine a bit more and if all else fails i'll start a new layer.

(Sorry for my poor grammer and punctuation)
If you generated your terrain/chunks before 1.7.3 came out then it shouldn't effect your world at all

I started this world only a couple days ago. The only thing that I have done is downloaded the skin pack. I might add some photos if I can think of a way to make use of them.
You do realize that diamond is actually rarer on the PC version right? In Beta 1.8, Diamond was made 25% rarer than before 1.8.
I haven't experienced this problem at all. I make a branch mine at diamonds most common layers, around 11 and 5. When I come back from branch mining, I usually have at least 3/4 to a full stack of diamond ore.

Holy mother of Notch. Well that's kind of embarrassing. Oh well, I'll just have to keep mining.
I am running into a lot of lava as well. My branches go far out but my starting shafts are pretty short. may just want to extend until i can no longer move. lol thanks for the help
Last night I branch mined in my friends world. Running a 3 high branch going 50 blocks in two directions, I hit several small veins for about 28 diamonds in roughly 40 minutes.
So... you're having some bad luck mate. Of course, before I joined and started my branches, my friend and his roommate had been digging around for about an hour and had only found 12 diamonds between the two of them. So, I might just be really lucky.
What I was curious about was on average how many diamonds are there per map? So far I've found 56 for one of my maps and was wondering if there are more like say 120 per map? More? Less? This thought has been nagging at me for quite some time and I've wanted to post it but kept forgetting.

Someone did the math once we learned of the worlds size before release.
It came out to something like about 12,000 diamonds per world. Maybe a little less than that. I don't remember and I can't find the threads where the math was done.

Found it.
I also believe it's something like this.
Diamond: 12,000
Gold 40,000
Iron 300,000
Coal 600,000
This was all figured out in a thread somewhere.
Holy ****! There's really that many?? Is that an accurate estimate you think? If that's true then I've only found about 5%(my math is terrible) of the diamonds on my map.
I don't branch mine, preferring to core out existing mines shafts or "spot mine". That being said, I've found a stack and a half since I started playing about a month ago. I'm not usually out looking for them and they are often a by product of my digging for cobblestone. I think you just haven't hit the right levels to yet. I find a lot in the levels 4-11. I just dug out a slime room and pulled 40 diamonds from a 48x64 room. I think it helps that I have a good map for raw materials too. I've co-opting on another map that doesn't seem to have the same richness.
