I know this is my first topic and I think just a handful of posts, but I have been playing Minecraft on Xbox since it came out, and then on Ipad before that. Never on computer though.
Anyways...I've made me a little city grid and everyone in the house has taken on a role of building different things on it. It's great fun to see who is building what. I've been accussed a few times of being too organized and I now spend hours sorting out chests and collecting resources. With more than a handful of creative buildings, we've also taken into stocking them including items, furniture and decorations. When we play online with friends, everyone has access to open items in available chests. Everyone plays by the rules and hard to find items are hidden by me in dif locations, IF we play online. I trust my fam, but still iffy on Friends of theirs that I havent played much.
So while my DH is out of town for the week, me and my daughters are working on stocking buildings. The obvious would be 1 of each tool, handfull of Cobble, Wood, Charcoal and Dirt, then maybe some arrows. At least have the option to make anything or even evading mobs, have somewhere to settle besides home. We also have a large Storage room with labele chests and are all open (reasonable off course) for the taking if anyone wanted to erect a building in the city.
I would love ya'll s take on what you keep in your offhand chests. Are they full of random stuff, or empty and just for show?
Last night we decided to add a bucket to the chests. Not only did we have to run back to get a bucket, but we did 3 times. So we added a bucket and 10 iron to a few chests. And courtesy of a few Creepers, I think I may put in a handful of each block that was used to make the building.

Alphabetized Storage Room with every item in the game....yeah MC OCD to the max
I like that you used the internet version of hubby in DH. lol I'm a lot like you, I like my chest tidy and spend a lot of time organizing them and making them make sense. Things aren't labeled because I'm the only one playing in my world (who can read really well) and don't have to worry about it. Any structure that is house like is furnished and I try to make them a little bit different just so that they are interesting. I don't stock them though unless the house or building doubles for a hideout from mobs or was the launching site of a construction project. I like to keep "main" buildings supplied with some iron, coal, a bucket, various blocks, furniture makings, tools and food. Wood is the only thing I don't normally keep in stashes just because it seems like I'm always using it and never have a sufficient surplus. I, also, mine like crazy. Some of it is because I recently finished a slime room and had a bunch of material come out of that and others is because I can't resist caving every time I see a hole in the ground.
I would love to see your world though! GT is over there <<<< .

I am a Minecraft tourist. I am currently unavailable under the XBoxLIVE ID listed here but can be found under ZombieL0C0. If you see me online playing Minecraft, send a message and I will gladly take a stroll through your world.
Wow! Lots of replies, thanks all! Well I've been searching through hoards of pics on storage rooms this morning. The question of, "Do I even have enough chests?" has come up. Before I get too far into it, I should mention that the 3 of us all room in the Castle. The Castle is the Main building. Complete with a small storage room with 10 chests, a Library (in case they add potions), a Smelting room with 2 chests, a Kitchen with 2 chests, the Dining room with 1 chest (for ready to eat food), our 3 rooms all the same size with whatever we put in them. My room is a mini home so I don't have to leave to even use the furnace. I think we each keep a certain stock in our rooms and then we all have a Dump Box (lol! i know how it sounds). But it's for emptying our pockets before we quit, because we use the same world on my Live profile (that way we dont have to wait for an hour while pockets are sorted out). I do spend a lot of time saying, "Oh! Who put this here?" lol!
I think we've got a good basic list so far though. Daughter is getting most of the resources together while I work. With leaving adamant space for the person that may bunk there or make a quick drop, we've got this list so far:
1 of each Iron Shovel, Axe, Pickaxe, Sword
Shears
64 Dirt
64 Cobblestone
Bucket ( i was going to fill the bucket with lava, but soon realized that i enjoyed burning all the trees down in the mountains, and feared that for our city. lol)
5 Food items
10 Iron Ingots
32 Torches
20 Coal
64 Sand or Sandstone (this is because we used Sandstone for the sidewalk. it's weak and continuosly blown up, but it sure does look good)
I play with my girlfriend and she wonders why I'm so organized in a game, yet can't seem to organize my closet. Luckily she understands I'm an OCD gamer and puts stuff where I think it goes.
Generally every building in the game has a random chest next to the workbench so we can just drop extra items used in crafting. Each also has a dedicated box for dirt and coblestone. Each location in the world also has their own storage fitting for their task. The biggest mine has precious ore and building materials, a farm area has chests for wool, food and other farm supplies, there's a glass factory full of sand and glass. There's a long rail system that spans most of the world leading from one location to the next so if I need something it's usually just a short cart ride away.
Of course in other people's world I have one chest for my current inventory, one for the craft table, and a big one for wood, dirt, and stone. Then I have a half dozen hidden around the world with my good stuff in it. If you're creative you can easily hide things safely. (Just don't hide it under your bed, they always look there first.)
Looks like I know what I'll be doing this weekend. After finally clearing out what would have been, our Underground City under the castle, my daughter and I built a new castle. lol! We decided that ours was too small, loved it, but just couldnt hold enough chests for us all. Well the new one took us 6 days to build in any free time we had, and it took 4 days to finally get the last block from the old one. In the same process, we took down our Mob Spawner and placed it above the direct center of our new castle. I think it took us more time to keep gathering Cobble for it, than it did to build. But it's awesome. Completely safe. and HUGE! We even moved the location from our last castle because we had issues of clearance. lol! Anyways, in the process of moving items and chests over, my Daughter decided to just grab everything she could and dump it wherever was close. As we didn't have many full chests from the new build, our storage room looks insane. We actually spent 30 min looking for a chest of Food items. lol! So yeah, my weekend will be full. At the moment, my chests are staggered Large on the bottom, with Small between on the next level. Im not completely satisfied with them though. I'll be spending some time looking for pics if anyone has some good ones.
I'm actually in the process of tearing down my castle and building a bigger house because I've run out of room. I have 8 chests of cobblestone, 6 of dirt, and then a chest for basically each individual item but I'm out of space. So moving all of that should just be tons of fun.
I used to kind of, make scrambled chests. (i.e, "Useful Shizz" "Garbage" "Building")
Then I did something very liberating for my inner OCD. I began to categorize. (i.e, "Alchemy Resources" "Unrefined Ores" "Scrap Tools and Mechanisms" "Engines and Cables")

I like that. Now I wont feel so funny when someone asks me what a Natural Block is. In our old castle, room for chests was limited and we had chests for Natural Blocks, Crafted Blocks and Furniture. What was bad was that Dirt was the usual fill, but we use so much whenever we add more grid to the city. Really the only thing I keep tabs on is Gravel. More than 10 pockets, down to the incinerator! lol! A lot of stuff stays in the Furnace/Smelting room though. We keep the now 32 furnaces full and cooking when we can remember. We use a lot of Stone and Glass. I think most of our buildings chests are empty from doing the castle, so that should be easy to organize them.
