This is not a viable answer when armor is an essential part to survival on any difficult other than peaceful.
To OP: it would be a nice addition to be able to make the armor invisible to see your skin. I don't know if it will ever come but it would be a nice option.

When I first read this, I thought you wanted a naked Master Chief or something... Anyway, I support. Maybe they could make a custom armour texture for each skin? That would take forever, however I would like that.

Lol although I know it's a stupid idea, I tend to owning mobs while I'm Master Chief.
Sure it's a placebo affect but it's funnny when my roomie watches me own 3 skeletons without getting touched and all I can say is that Zombies ain't got **** on Master Chief.
I'm not going to "fight" for the option, just thought it'd be a cool idea. I'mma post pics in a mOment on how it retarded it looks. Just plain funny to see Master Chief in pants.

Maybe minecraft could take a lesson from Terraria: add some spaces on your person for Vanity Items. That way you could wear iron armor but have an invisible vanity item to hide it.
And I only use leather armor, as armor is leathers only use. Iron, Gold, and Diamond can be used for better or more necessary items, in my opinion.LOOOL Just noticed the mess on my desk. Ignore that stuffs please.

think we might need to go use a dictionary then as clearly people are coping on none peaceful without armour so therefore it cannot be essential by definition
