Note: This is based off of what might happen if 4J takes the same path the PC version did. I can't ensure ALL of this will happen. It's just a dumb rant of what MIGHT happen in 1.8 by judging what the PC did.
I'm not against things like ravines, mineshafts, etc. But the problem I have is that all worlds have little variation between them. Once you've seen every biome in 1.8, you're not going to see much more. Height variation is non-existent, are there are less biomes overall.
It's good for builders. But for people who like to explore, the new generation just kills the game. The entire point of the "Adventure" update is negated because of it. It's bad enough the world is stuck in a small 1000x1000 square, we don't need every world looking the same.
Problems with the 1.8 terrain:
-Almost no mountains outside of the Extreme Hills biome. Most forests look the same. The most you'll get are 10-20 block high hills.
-Almost no trees on mountains
-Removal of certain biomes (Savannah, Rainforest, ect)
-Underground is turned into a swiss cheese complex of caves
Unless they preserved the current biome code, and only added the structures and new biomes(Not altering the other ones), I'd be perfectly fine with it.
But out of all things, the new biome generation is the only thing I hate about 1.8.
Keep in mind this is based off of what happened in the PC version. 4J could probably change any of the above problems. But we don't know yet.
The risk with old worlds made before 1.8:
Whenever the biome code in the game changes in an update, the biomes in old words may get screwed up. Your forest my suddenly turn into a desert, and the grass and leaf colors will look ugly. Or a desert will turn into a snow biome. Unless 4J made something to preserve old worlds, this will be a huge problem.
Keep in mind the world will still work, but the biome you live in will probably change.
Problem with Seeds:
Seeds that work with 1.7 will no longer generate like they used to. Seeds like Glacier will no longer work like they used too, because the new biome code overwrites the old one when seeds are used. This isn't that big of an issue, but it is for some who rely on seeds. Some even like to save their world if they want to play it again from a fresh start.
In a nutshell:
Forests will turn from this, into this boring, flat forest
All biomes will suffer from this treatment. The only biome with actual mountains is the Extreme Hills biome.
Some posts from this thread that agree with this standpoint:
The terrain generation that came with the beta 1.8 update is what caused me to start losing interest in Minecraft. It got so dull and boring and exploration felt seriously lacking, even though they added all these new gameplay mechanics. Hearing about the Xbox version launching at the equivalent of beta 1.6.6 is the main thing that got me interested in it. The Xbox version is what re-sparked my interest in Minecraft. It felt like the good old days because it was the good old days. If they include the terrain generation in the 1.8 update for the xbox, it would probably kill it for a lot of people. Either that or everyone will be using the same seed in the hopes for some interesting terrain. One way to probably circumvent it would be to create a bunch of new worlds and never play on them before the update. I'll probably be doing that.

I'm the opposite. I can't wait for the 1.8.2 update. I'm tired of almost every single map I generate have the most ridiculous mountains ever.
But almost all biomes would look the same. There is next to no variation in the new biome code. The problem still exists to this day on the PC version.

Doesn't bother me one bit. I can't wait to be rid of super steroid mountains.
aren't the maps already like swiss cheese? In every map i play on i cant strip mine very well without digging into a cave or falling down some ridiculously deep hole... 1.8 just adds a bit of realism into the terrain in my opinion......i'm tired of little 10x10 deserts.
Ok so my city is built over a desert, does that mean it could suddenly turn to snow? I dont want my buildings covered in snow...
For god sake why do they have to change everything so drastically every update... Its impossible to design something to look nice because you have no idea how its going to look after the next update, its VERY annoying.

There is a possible chance it may happen. I've had it happen to some of my worlds on the PC version. You won't know what will happen until the update is out.
The game is still technically in beta stage, and they will continue to update until it's up to date with the PC version. Things like this will happen.
Why the hell they couldnt just build it to be at the PC stage to begin with I have no idea... All the bugs / glitches / new items etc were already fixed and designed and implemented in PC before they even started making the xbox version, so why on earth would they start developing the xbox version as an old make... Makes nooooo sense.

When they started development, the PC game was at version 1.6.6. That's the build they had at the time.

Sorry I reset the poll, I wanted to make the choices more descriptive to a standpoint.
Well i wish they left i at 1.6 ... Pistons are overated and the new lighting & new glass texture is disgusting.
The glass texture is the same. I think the problem is that the mip-mapping with blocks at far ranges was not adjusted for the new lighting engine, so glass is all screwed up. It will probably get fixed.
I would be overjoyed if they fix the look of glass from a distance, because it totally screwed up the look of my world... But im not holding my breath!

You can do that, but there is 1 problem:
When the terrain code changes, biomes in existing worlds made in the past may shift.
Your desert could suddenly turn into a snow biome because the code was altered.
Or your forest could turn into a desert, with ugly grass and leaf colors.
Basically, unless they made some way to preserve old worlds,a world made before 1.8 will have very buggy biomes.
But almost all biomes would look the same. There is next to no variation in the new biome code. The problem still exists to this day on the PC version.
The world will still work. But as said, your biomes will possibly be out of place and shuffled.
