I have a sugarcane farm. It has 110 sugarcane, and each time it's harvested, the top 2 blocks of each plant get broken. So there are 220 drops for each harvest.
The harvest is triggered automatically every 5 minutes by a pressure plate. The problem is, whenever I load my game up, or just randomly while I'm playing, the pressure plate will get stuck in the depressed position. In fact, all of my redstone contraptions require manual resets every time I load up my world, and sometimes they just get jammed while I'm playing. Anyway...
In order to fix it, I have to break the pressure plate and put it back down. Breaking it triggers the harvest mechanism, which then breaks 220 sugarcanes. The drop limit is 200, so as soon as I break the pressure plate, IT DISAPPEARS, so that the sugarcane can stay.
So basically, every time I load up my game, and periodically while I'm playing, I have to go make another pressure plate, so that when I have to fix my harvester, and that pressure plate disappears, I can replace it.
There are 3 problems at work here.
1) The drop limit is way too low.
2) Redstone circuits jam randomly.
3) Pressure plates jam randomly.
The combination of these three factors makes for a consistently unpleasant experience, because I have to spend way too much time resetting all of my circuits every time I want to play the game.
Aye Ive noticed a similar problem with my clock pulsar, when loading my game they aren't working untill I break and replace (granted not such a big problem for me, but I can see how frustrating it can be with yer farm)
I'm pretty sure that the pressure plate and redstone jamming is caused when the game loads up the pieces of the contraptions in the wrong order, so it just jams. This also happens when leaving and returning to a chunk.
I don't think this was a problem on the PC version, because the servers were constant, right?
I just get so tired of 'Load game, make pressure plate, go to garden, reset circuit, replace pressure plate, go to house, break redstone, replace redstone, go to castle, break redstone, replace redstone, THEN play the game.'
Use less sugar cane. Why would you even need that much?
That would only fix the issue of the pressure plate disappearing. He would still have to manually reset everything each time. But I was wondering the same thing.
You could try making a pulse starter and stopper with some pistons and a t flip-flop. That way you can turn on and off the circuit when you leave and enter the game. I don't know if this will fix the problem with the pressure plates, but it should help with the circuit jamming every time you enter the game.

Couldn't you just switch the pressure plate with a button or lever?
I don't think you can do that... can you? Besides, even if you could, wouldn't that just invert the entire circuit? The OFF position would become the ON position, etc...
To fix it, I have to fully reset it (a.k.a. replace the pressure plate).
Also... even if switching it worked... I'd need a redstone circuit to reset my redstone circuits lol
I was thinking more of a temporary solution. It won't auto-harvest every 5 minutes, but it should work until there is a fix for redstone/pistons/pressure plates.
1 question... Why would you want so much sugar cane...
I bet you don't use any of it..
If its just for the coolness factor of having an automated farm though, then I understand you being frustrated, it would be pretty cool, even if it is useless

It's not useless =(
I need all that paper to write love letters to all my hoes.
I'm not sure if you saw my earlier post in this tread, but you can try a pulse starter/stopper with a button/piston combination. That way you can start and stop the circuit each time you enter and leave the game.

Hmm... I don't think I'm able to do that. All of my circuits are in hidden, enclosed spaces... but I made sure that no circuit has a chance of accidentally triggering another one.

It just seems like too much work to fix something that shouldn't be a problem in the first place =\
Its annoying how you cant have 2 pressure plates beside eachother without one triggering the other one as well... makes automatic door entrances need a gap between the 2 doors... Asthetically annoying.

Well, there's a redstone circuit that can fix that easily

Because I like legitimately gaining lots of stuff at the same time.
Cake factory maybe?

Retired StaffYep.
My doors also get stuck in the open position, FOR NO REASON
ughhh =(

I need all that paper to write love letters to all my hoes.
In the hoes chest.
Which I can't correctly label.
I dunno.
