I am trying to flatten a lot of land and I was wondering what is the quickest way?

lot of hard work...

tnt, then smooth the rest out

For mountains use TNT. but for smaller hills and stuff just use a spade and pickaxe

TNT is the fastest way, followed by both a gold shovel and pickaxe if you can't get enough TNT

Gold tools break too easy.....

It is nothing but hard work.

If your underground, use a Diamond pickaxe.

4 Diamonds, Around 35 Sulfur, 28 Sand, and most importantly 4 sticks.

Who uses gold tools? They have 33 uses before they break. that's faster than wooden tools.

I always just use a diamond shovel, and some stone pickaxes if i run into stone.

Get a lot of friends to help

in 1.8 or 1.9 we will get the ability to generate a flat world. Untill then... Find someone with OCD flatten out your world

Close. It was a snapshot pre-release for 1.1 that gave the ability to generate a Flatland map. So we won't be getting it until 1.2.3 which is only 2 updates away so probably not that long of a wait.

Yeah i'd say by the end of the year we should have it. Though i'm sure if enough people want it, they might be able to push it into an earlier build like they did with smooth lighting, but that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Gold tools may break extremely easily, but it you have a ton of gold, they do mine much quicker than diamond. The OP did ask for the fastest way.

Lets see.... 33 uses vs 1562 ... Speed is a non-issue. The Diamond shovel is the second fastest and has the most uses. It would be faster and more practical to use Diamond.

Why use gold, you say? Because it mines extremely fast. The only point to even being able to craft gold tools is for exactly that. So if you have a ton of gold and want to flatten an area; clear out your inventory, and craft a bunch of gold shovels/pickaxes. Why waste your diamond on dirt?

There are only three things that diamond is good for in Minecraft right now, tools, one weapon, and armor. Gold right now has other more productive uses such as clocks and powered rails.

64 Golden Shovels = 2112 uses
Break Speed on Dirt = 0.0625 s

2 Diamond Shovels = 3124 uses
Break Speed on Dirt = 0.0938 s

I'm sorry, but in the long run, diamond shovels are more efficient in my opinion. If someone is really bothered a 0.03 second difference, then I really don't know what to say to that person.

Enchant a bunch of golden tools and use TNT, if there are trees in the way grab an axe or burn them down.
